tbh i don't consider WoW that more challenging.
All games become dull and automated once you reached endgame, got the best gear and can kill monsters with your eyes closed. They only got a limited amount of tricks up their sleeves and if you play long enough, you know them.

True, but the "challenge cap" is much higher. Compare the LK fight to... well, anything in AO.
compare the age of AO to LK...sorry to burst the bubble, but when i was playing WoTLK on release on my NE druid...most fights were too easy and later on with my DK NE were even simpler. The bosses added challenge at first, but after 10 times you start to remember all the tricks and just watch TV during the fight.
Though i admit that some bosses in WoW and WAR suprised me the first time, which AO hasn't managed to do anymore since the first time i did Beast.

I m not sure PvM needs "difficulty"... I saw above someone saying for instance that doc aren't needed because content is too easy... Imo this is a good thing, it allows to do the content with weird team configurations, specially in a game with lowish population.
If you want difficult things, complex gameplay, timing, "skill", you go do pvp, imo.
PvM as i see it is more a chilling part of AO in which you socialise, enjoy graphisms, stories, quest, light show & looting phat lewt. It is pretty huge allrdy if you were to do all of it, goin thru a huge variety of different environnment, etc etc. What is boring is when you start doing again and again the same part, but at first most of the existing content is fun, to me.

I doubt you'd be watching TV through the Lich King or Yogg fights.
Yes, god forbid you might actually have to exercise a couple of neurons to get your phatz.
Good grief! Seriously? Waste of Web? That is the game you want to compare my comment to? The most brain dead one I have ever played?
I need some hard liquor or something; seems everyone today is out to make my brain hurt.
His reply to what you said made little sense, I agree. And it would be really cool to have the kind of challenge in a MMO that you are referring to. When it comes to leveling and killing stuff, WoW is indeed as mindless as they come. AO isn't much better in this regard though. (thinking of all PvM that does not include instances and boss encounters)
However, when it comes to instances and boss encounters, WoW has a much better design than AO. It's more varied. It requires more strategy. It requires everyone in a team to pay more attention in general. It's less forgiving of messups. It requires more flawless teamwork from everyone involved than in AO.
When it comes to instances and boss encounters, WoW is one of the very best and AO is leaning more towards the "braindead" side of things. This has gotten a bit better for AO lately with stuff like the collector or whatever but even the best AO has to offer in this regard is only considered "standard fare" in WoW.
If only the same level of design that is put into WoW's instances and boss encounters could be put into the normal leveling and open world PvM in AO.

That was my point.
As far as levelling content goes... honestly, I doubt it will ever be challenging, as you can't guarantee an optimal or near-optimal group most of the time (hell, at lower levels you're lucky if you get anything that isn't a heck group), which is something you really need in order to fine tune encounters.
And yes, what we need is more fights like collector. Even better if FC reworks their old content to bring it up to that level.
Now, are you still wondering why I prefer the fr00b game? Small fr00b only raid forces, need the buffs, all professions welcome and useful. Non cookie cutter can be made to work. Scaled up "suicide missions" and so forth.

Make the perfect little team or tank team then sit back and Tab Q. It is a sorry mess. Foregone conclusions.

The problem in AO is that everytime they try to implement something that requires team work and attention, players either find a way to do it with less than intended skill , whine that its too hard and they cant do it in under 5mins, or its just difficult or complicated due to how some of AO works.

If they didn't then give equipment that boosted you well beyond it being a challenge or reduced the difficulty in the design.
Example: LoTV should have been ramped up years ago. It should not be able to be solo'ed or two teamed.
I just shake my head and *sigh* when people tell me about that.
Same goes for most anything, Hez, Mercs, Hags, 5 man, small team for Beast and so forth.
I really don't know how you guys find that enjoyable.
