Thread: Tip to get better graphics in AO

  1. #41
This is an interesting "hack" for sure, tinkered around a bit and got AO working with filters on fullscreen. Though, no real FPS improvement and windowed mode resulted only in extremely choppy performance. The end result was pretty surprising nevertheless, AO looks good with little anti alias applied.

Tried this with ATI Radeon x1650 on Omega drivers.

Yup... Tried changing global settings also since I only play AO... No change whatsoever...

Tried with the various game engine settings also... Primary D3D / Primary T&L D3D.
    Same result.

Tried windowed mode as well as fullscreen at both the above combinations.
    Same result.

Tried different drivers, at the above mentioned combinations having uninstalled and cleaned out previous Nvidia driver.
    Same result.

Nothing changes whatsoever... Not even the FPS...

Ok so this is what my settings look like (acc1, acc2 for the two top pics)
This helped me get rid of the massive lag in playershops and the outpost.

    Color depth 16 bit

    Hi.

I think I found a solution for the new Geforce User with "No anti aliasing" problem.

Set your display color setting 16-bit. (By Windows)

I guess the reason for so many ppl having the same problem is that they have the new card with the default setting of 32-bit.

    Hope this helps.

Worked perfectly well with my Geforce 9800GT, with full anti-aliasing effect!

To make sure I understood you correct...

You set your Windows color depth to 16bit, and then AA worked in AO?

    Yah, that's what I meant.

    In short,

    1. Set your Windows color depth to 16 bit.

    2. Set your Geforce Anti Aliasing (AA) ON (with whatever Control Panel u have)

    3. Configure AO with the launcher CP

    Resolution
    Predefined - Use 16 instead of 32 (e.g. 1920x1080x16)

    If Run in Window
    Custom - Choose 16 instead of 32 (e.g. 1920x1080x16)

    Texture Color Depth
    16 BPP

    4. Launch AO

I have been trying to find the solution myself for a couple of weeks, and this was the solution for me.

    Hope this works for everyone.

@Work at the moment, so I will give it a go when I get home...

Have you tried setting AO to 16bit color, while keeping Windows at 32bit, to see if that works?

    Hm, never thought of that!

I'm not a technical person here, but my guess was that AO does NOT fully support 32-bit Anti aliasing.

Since the AA function has been added some time after the launch (was it 2003 ?), I had a feeling that AA does not function perfectly well.
That's why I have tried switching to 16 bit mode, which, was our default setting back in 2002.

I will test other setting/combination and come back to this thread later.

BTW, any nice site to upload JPG file? I have taken some screenshots for reference.

I'm getting 7-30 FPS generally Worst is in crowded areas, like the BS queue just after a round has finished with all the nano effects/shields sparkling away.

(I rely on nano effect, so I'm not turning them off)

My system (all bought 2004 except GC):
P4 3GHz (200MHz bus), 2GB 3200 DDR1 LL RAM, WD Raptor HD, ATI Radeon x1650 (new catalyst drivers last night)

I found this website quite informative (there's a guide for nvidia cards too)

I'm forcing x4/x8 on client.exe, using the ATT (I don't use the catalyst control centre, it sux a bit ). Everything looks a bit nicer, but my FPS are almost identical. Tried x2/x4 & too & things got ugly... I'm guessing my bottleneck is elsewhere *shrugs*

The only prob I get is the BS map is slightly corruprted, but still quite readable.

I might try the Omega stuff... but tbh I think I just need a better PC or the new engine out

The Engine is using the CPU only. This tip is for post-processing of what the CPU allready calced. So you wont get any FPS improvements at all, it just looks nicer.

D'oh! I should have read more carefully Have re-read now & that makes more sense, sry for posting stupid stuff! >.<

Ofc, can't expect lower FPS from this alone.

Just to clarify somethign for me, the new engine uses DX9 & hence your gpu, right?

Tried 16bit color, but I get really bad color banding with that...

I will wait with AA and such till I have my main PC back up and running.

    PS.
    But AA did activate btw...
Could only get 2x2 AA to work though.

ok, this actually worked for me, but only in 16-bit mode. But I trade color quality for AA any day. I got a 8800GTS and use x16/x16 atm and I got some smaller performance loss, but steadier so far.

btw not all driver sets support forcing aa/af on applications, some of us have to dl 3rd party prgs (like nhancer for most geforce and radlinker for amd(ati) cards) as for what either exactly do AF refilters texture scaling generally making far away stuff look better and AA has several different modes but the general idea is to multisample models to make them blend better making their edges "smooth"

    ps! 8800s run 32 bit w aa/af w 3rd party progs just fien

edit: took a trip in ely to show ppl wtf this is about

    http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/7325/aabk7.jpg

Here is a sample screenshot of AO with/without AA.

I think trading 32-bits with AA is satisfying deal. Can't live without AA now once I see the difference.

BTW, I can't really see the difference in running 16-bits or 32 bits...
