Ineof rolled over onto his back, using up the entire bed and quilt to keep himself as comefortable and warm as he possibly could. He had been working hard all week, and was glad to finally have a lie in.
"Hey Ineof! Get up! You gotta come see this!"
Ineof's robot, Vert, shouted up the stairs. Ineof rolled over again, and put his head underneath the pillow with a gentle moan.
"Ineof! Come on dude!"
Vert was something special all right. Ineof had been hunting a few years ago when he found a small memory unit in Old Athen subway, badly damaged though. He took it out and worked on it for many months to repair it and restore the corrupted damage, then put it into his computer. Nothing happened however, it seemed there was nothing on the disk. But then out of curiosity, he slotted it into his Andriods memory, and suddenly his robot had a mind of its own. Ever since then, Ineof had kept with Vert, becoming the best of friends. People were amazed by the robots personality, as such a thing had never been seen before. It is still a mistory today where that memory came from.
"Ineof! Come on man! Don't make me come up there!"
"Alright, alright give me a minute."
Ineof slowly rolled out of his bed, falling face first onto the floor, cracking his nose rather painfully. He swore quietly under his breath, before pulling himself up and stumbling around the room, trying to get his trousers on without sitting down. He walked down the stairs and into the front room where his slayerdriod, Vert, was squatting on the floor in front of the TV.
"Vert, you really shouldn't squat like that, it can't be healthy for your circuits."
"Shh! Watch!"
Ineof took a seat on the sofa and pulled out a chewing gum. On the TV, some reporters were fighting over the right to talk to Phillip Ross, the leader of Omni.
"Those damn Omni scum. What have they done this time?" Ineof frowned as he stared at the idiot-box.
"Now come on Ineof, the employees aren't scum. They are just... Misguided." Vert was surprisingly emotional, for something with wires for veins.
"They are all as bad as each other in my books."
The reporters had calmed down a little on the television, and it was just about possible to understand what a few were saying.
"Mr Ross! Mr Ross! Tell us what happened to those specialists you sent into the old mine! Why have their families all said they haven't returned!"
Ross ignored the loud-mouth reporter and carried on walking towards his car, surronded by a number of bodyguards who were mowing their way through the gaggle of reporters.
"Mr Ross! Why hasn't any work started in the mine?"
"Mr Ross! What are your imediate plans for the future of Omni?"
Ross carried on walking, staying behind his bodyguards like a king in his castle, a straight line replacing where a smile would be on any other person.
"Mr Ross! Can you tell us any more about Fiona's death?"
Ross stopped and turned to face the latest reporter to shout a question at him. He started straight into the reporters eyes, a cold hard stare. Tears started to build up in Ross's eyes and a lump in his throat swelled up, making him choke. He grabbed the reported by the collar and lifted him in the air a few inches, his eyes of stone not once losing their contact with the terrified reporters.
"Nobody ever mentions Fiona to me again. Especially some blood-sucking reporter, you sorry piece of crap." Ross spluttered through clenched teeth, his grip tightening as he got more and more angry with every word he said. When he realised the reporter was gagging for air he released him, making sure to put a little force into it though, sending the reporter flying into a nearby group of cameramen.
Ever since his daughter Fiona died Ross had been avoiding everything to do with her. He still cried himself to sleep at night, he still couldn't enter her old bedroom, he still couldn't face himself in the mirror, hating himself, and hating everyone around him.
It was 12 years ago now, that doctors had diagnosed Fiona with cancer. She was only 6 years old, too young for an insurance scanner to be able to trap her weak life-force. At this day and age, we still can't beat the ancient deteriative disease, Ross always thougt to himself at night. He never forgave himself. As her condition deteriorated, Ross was finding more and more work piling onto him. He had no time for his sick daughter any more.
He had told her that he had to go away on an important business trip to sort some things out with the ICC and that he would be gone for a month. She pleaded with him to stay, promising she would behave better and try not to be so ill all the time if he stayed. But his work was too much, so he denied. She then asked if she could come with him, and desperatly tried to stand up to prove to him she was getting better. As she stood up, she quickly collapsed, out of breath and ill. He told her gently that he would see her in a month, and he kissed her on the forehead before leaving her alone with the nurses for another month.
When he came back, she had died.
"Sir, please get into the car" The call of his bodyguard brought him back to reality.

"Whats going wrong with the TV Ineof?" Vert, still squatting, was wondering what was going on, as the TV was getting very distorted.
"Beats me. Hey whats that thing there?"
"Where?" Vert looked around the room.
"No, on the TV. That... Little black spot. Its just above that big building on the left of the screen. You see it?"
"Hey yeah I do. Its getting bigger."
Ineof and Vert never moved from their seats, glued to the TV. They watched as a few of the reporters crowding Ross's car also saw the strange thing coming towards them. A few shouted out, pointing at the object.
As it got closer, Ineof realised that it was some sort of beast. It had massive wings, that were flapping effortlessly through the air. Though this beast looked a bit like a metaphysical demon in the middle.
A few cameramen shouted out loud, a mixture of gasps and screams, and everyone dived on the floor, cameras and other equipment smashing everywhere. Ross stuck his head out of the window of his car to see what the problem was.
The massive beast swooped very low and close to the floor, down at the group of petrified cameramen and reporters, clinging onto the floor for life. It flew at great speed a few inches above the floor, and a few inches from Ross's window right over the petrified gaggle on the floor, before swooping back up into the air.
As Omni guards scrambled to the mounted guns dotted around the city they aimed at the sky, looking everywhere for the horror that had just glided through their city, though it was nowhere to be seen.
As Ineof was still trying to get his heartbeat back into the right speed, the TV cut off. He walked over to it and started banging on the top of it, but it was no good. Then the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Ineof?"
"Yes, this is Ineof."
"The Engineer?"
"Yes..."
"Good. We have a job for you."
---
As Ross sat in his car, his bodyguards running around trying to make sure the area is secure, Ross muttered one thing to himself.
"So... He can fly too..."
