I tried to give the whole thread a good looking over before I posted this to make sure I didn't restate what someone else had already stated, and I don't think anyone has mentioned it.

Dark Age of Camelot has done something just like what you're asking and it IS very nice. You don't have to walk around all day long with your weapons in your hands, and it looks neater to wear your weapons, anyway. One handed weapons go on your hip(s). Two-handed weapons go on your back. Some weapons in AO, though, may be hard to do this with simply because of their shape.
