Ok guys, I thought I would move the comments here, and get some of these great discussion going.
So come on in and lets talk.

my only question is do you have the manpower? i mean, something small like walking up to a hunting group and saying that you need monster parts from a particular shade, or robot junk from a junkbot technoscavenger, and then giving a reward if the group actually brings one to you would be cool. but, you need people to actually run around and do that. i just can't see that happening, i have yet to see an ark, and i have only seen one gm the whole time i have played.

Quote from Captfallout From Bashers comments section

Kegern was actually on the events team, so he'd actually have more insight than Dai here. So maybe you can understand why I feel this is just another filler promise ("uh, please keep paying. We won't make things fun anytime soon, but uh... be patient. Yeah")

    End Quote.

I did not carry the whole message over correct.

Yes capt you are correct that Kegern is part of the events team and by the was works dam hard at it as well. Yes he knows alot more about what happens in the events than I. But the statement that I send out was not a promise it was I was just informing you as to what is comming in the future and that is exactly what you asked or in the irc more information as to what is going on. I said the same thing there as I do now as many can atest to from the irc chat we had .

Now here we go people lets bring the comments here.

i think more events would definitely be nice, but to avoid lag you could just run up to a hunting party and say hey, i need this. go get it and ill give you a reward.

  5. #5
Well lets not get that simplistic please, I would like to have events run by GM's which can be both simple and involved. Lets not let em of the hook by saying "well just come up to us when we are hunting tell us you need this". Have events that take 30 people and events that two people can do, or even one person. That would make that person feel really involved and motivated to come back and continue paying right?

I would really really really like to see multi high level team events. This is the place I would assume that they can make high level content up the easiest.

well, yeah, im not saying just the one thing. but you could have reasonably small events quite easily. the only problem is that if you can't affect the story, there is probably only so much you can do.

This is a partial response to the previous thread on Basher... where someone mentioned the game crashing with 25 people.

While I think that number by be exaggerated a bit, even I have noticed that the client has been unresponsive with not that many people in visual range.

I was looking at the network packets one day, and noticed that there was a lot of name lookup (code 21) packets being thrown around frequently by the chat server. This is partially due to my friends list being big, but also because I was just logging in. My thought - and I can totally be mistaken on this issue - is that the lag/unresponsiveness some people have been complaining about is the client attempting to process the substantial amounts of tcp based name lookups/responses that the chat server is throwing back, especially in event areas where you have the standard friends list being refreshed plus the names of the people as they come into range.

I'm not sure if the rate at which these uids are reissued by the chat server are staggered, but it could explain why even some people with lots of memory/good graphics cards/cable+ modems are suffering this problem. Connection speed doesn't help the routers process all these uid/name packets that much faster. Note that I am not saying graphics processing doesn't play a role, but this may be somewhere else to look at and could explain why it's been somewhat hard to pin-down and reproduce onsite.

In any case, I know this is a technical issue, but somewhat related to holding successful massive events so I've posted it here.

Can I suggest that you pass this along to the programming team and get someone external on an ISP with a really crapper router to test it? :P

Here's hoping we can get rid of that evil gremlin.

    Dai-Galean,

I haven't seen anyone say anything about Rubi-Ka 2 yet, so here goes. I want to know if these events will be happening on RK2 just as often as on RK1. I'm not talking about just the mini-events, those are nice, but I also want to know about the storyline (plot driven) events. Rubi-Ka 2 doesn't seem to be seeing as many events that affect the storyline as RK1 does, and I find it to be truly unfair.

I doubt you'll se as many events on RK-2 as are on RK-1. There are more people on RK-1, so that's where most events are going to happen. The best you can hope for is events proportianate to population. i.e. if there are 1/4 the people on RK-2, you'll see 1/4 as many events.

How was the decision made to not post these changes in the patch notes after repeatedly promising that everything except exploit information would be in the patch notes?

Why didn't this information get posted here on your official boards instead of at a fansite? Should we be checking AO-Basher to find out what will be coming in future patches since this patch has been personae non grata on these boards as far as your Customer Service people are concerned? Remember how great 13.4 was after you did all that work on these boards, I had assumed you would learn from your success.

Scorus, well I can see your point about posting changes in the patch notes but you should think about this for a second, everthing that is to do with the players is posted in the patch notes, when fixes or nerfs happen it is said. Something like this really is more internal but still we let you know. I mean how will this affect your game play ? Technically it does not this is only to enhance you playing not hinder it.

For a long time now Solarax and other major fan site people have been saying "Dai, when can we get some juicey news somthing that is not known, we want phat news". So this I thought would help. Let me ask you this also then is it wrong to give out a little bit of news to the fansites?

So say we add a new dungeon, if we do not give you the cords and how to kill the boss mob, will you then say "hey you did not put it in the patch notes, you lied" where should we stop adding info and let the players find out the fun things them selves.

I think small events is the way to go and events targeted at certain people, i have a funny event to tel you about that FC neglected to mention cause it was a total mess.

A lot of people gathered at the castle in 20K lvl-range was from 9-140 and we were maybe 50 people 10-15 above 100 we went into a static dungeon where we were supposed to find a clanner and escort him out of the complex.

As we entered we found Ace and higher mobs in there and people lagged horribly we managed to kill them of with some problerms due to 50 ppl in one room the size of an ordinary mission-room, then the **** hit the fan and we stumbled upon a room with 10-15 mobs in it, it was a large room with several floors and walkways everyone crowded up in the room next to it someone lagged into it and hell broke loose i think all of us died, then some time of waitin, FC was obviously discussing the failure.

Then they let us reenter and they reset the whole mission, we started over with even more people than the first time, and lag was even worse once more we attacked those guys and several of us died.

One guy in my guild died and was healed at the same time and got bugged and couldnt be killed he found the doctor in the mission and talked to him he was kind of rude (he is atrox) the GM that polayed the doctor tried to attack him but couldnt hit him due to previous mentioned bug.

After that all became a blur and the event died out.

    Conclusion:

This is what happens when to many players are involved in an event and when you allow anyone to attend to it.
What was a lvl 10 doing there. Only thing he provided was extra nice lag, get a lot of evcents goin for different people and target different groups of players for the event, for example this event is for this guild or whatever you see fit.

    ?

I almost get the impression that every event is gonna be story-related ?

I mean there are so many ways to put in small, nice and fun events.

    example:

Suddenly in the game you get the message:

ALERT ALERT a wild horde of bulls is loose at tir E, demolishing everything in their way.
    We need your help citizens...

and then if you go there you can kill those bulls and get a reward. If you kill 10 and take their remains to some npc he would give you something like an bullbag or bullcoat or whatever.

    another example:

Suddenly in the game you get the message:
    (which can be side affected)

ATTENTION all clanners, an shuttle carrying an omni-tec intelligence agent has crashed somewhere in the desert of avalon, find him and retrieve the secret intelligence information he has with him!!!

and then if you can find him and retrieve the info which you return to some npc you also get a reward.

I just want to point out that you can create a lot of small and fun events, not story related and that there is a big need to have a lot of these events.

The most simple things are nice. Leets running through tir city giving low lvl buffs etc..

i hope that with your new tools you are capable of creating lots of events and not all story related.

I can see your points. But as you know from these boards, there has been a LOT of disappointment with the quality and quantity of events (especially on RK-2 and at European-friendly hours) and mentioning the fact that these enhancements were present would at least tell us that you recognize and are addressing the problem. One of the biggest frustrations is that your company too seldom acknowledges that a problem exists and gives no substantive information concerning efforts to solve it.

And I keep hearing from testers about little discoveries that were not in the patch notes. Chemical maussers? Changes to our ability to collect unique items? Psychic and implants now adding to nano pool? All those have been reported, affect characters and yet are still not in your patch notes (which weren't even finalized until you had the patch on test for 3-4 days).

Your company announced in October a desire to move toward a "zero surprise" policy in relation to patch changes, yet changes that have been widely reported and discussed on these boards still don't make it into your notes.

As far as the fansite question, I can understand you wanting to throw them a bone now and again. My frustration just lies in the continued lack of information given out via the official mediums set up by your company to transmit information. We are getting better info from fansites and IRC now than when we ask direct questions of those who are supposed to provide answers via the medium set up by Funcom to provide those answers.

    Arrow Events per me...

I want something quite simple to come from all of this discussion.

    • I want the story to revolve around me.
    • I want all that is uber.
    • I want the starring role in the movies.

The fact is we don't even get 1/4 of the events, we haven't gotten ANY storyline events. I think we have had one or two minievents that don't effect the ongoing story plot, those are nice and fun, but we need some of the story events to take place as well. You can't simply assume that everyone on Rubi-Ka2 wants to create another character on RK1, some (like me) have their character the way they want them and refuse to start all over. I want my main character to see some action!

It is beginning to seem highly doubtful we will be seeing events, one reason for this feeling is the fact that we don't even have a "Voice of Freedom" channel. Basically they have just about outright said we aren't as important, only they won't do that directly because we will leave the game.

    just a little comment

I must say the event stuff I've seen mentioned on the basher-thread both is good, and makes me a little sad.

Its good that so much ~is~ happening and relieved that the events aren't as tilted as it sometimes seems (only a few are really deeply involved in the 'story' events, which always makes me feel guilty), but it saddens me that because of the position I put myself in, I won't be able to have as many of these small 'slice of life' things happen (at least not FC side), or anyways... I'd be reluctant to include me if I were Funcom. (that last sentence is a doozy). The problem being the impression of favoritism.

I'm fortunate enough to have alot to do anyways tho, so I won't whine

    Dai,

Last night was a small event, it seems like the event was exactly the kind that these changes were meant to provide. The event was a mission from the Omni-Tek Corporation for some of their people to get a clanner out of clan territory and back to Omni-HQ (a defector, I believe). When they got back, someone from the guild that keeps breaking up your events with their griefing efforts killed the clanner. They, OT'ers, knowingly and purposefully thwarted a mission that Omni-Tek was trying to carry out. How will Omni-Tek punish their employees?

When are you going to give GMs the ability to punish these people who keep ruining your story and other players' fun? There are OT players running around that have attacked Ross, for God's sake! Did the slap on the wrist for Aberic really reflect your complete lack of interest in running a RP game?
