The chat bar really needs to be devided in two, one for combat and one for speach, everytime you're in a fight you miss out on people speaking to you because all the combat messages "spam" the chat.

In the option menu, you have the chat tab, there you can setup what is displayed in the chat window.
One of the options is particulary usefull in the case you describe it is the Others hit others.
Removing this will remove 80% of the "combat spam" in the chat windows and you don t really need to see the crits of your teamates, they could make you jalous and believe you're a gimp unless you're an adept of "who's got the biggest?".

Actually Neverwinter Nights did this extremely well.

There was an option that would split the chat window down the center. One side was dialogue and the other side was combat information.

Very good setup.
