    • Right click the AO shortcut
    • Run with Graphics Processor (either change default, or select High performance NVIDIA processor)
    • In the launcher settings, visual tab, rendering device, click change
    • Your primary display driver will be the 940m

I did try that, so the game just runs super poorly on a 940m huh?

It is always good idea to provide some basic information's on your setup when something is not working to avoid unnecessary time wasting by trying this trying that, and suddenly 10 years passed and you still trying this trying that to resolves the problem.
Imagine you are a doctor and im telling you i have pain in my belly without giving you any more relevant info, like how long i have had the pain, did i ate something wrong? If you was that doctor what you should do is just give me and anyone like me a viagra to troll us since you cant read minds.

However back on topic: Since you only provided little information's, and this is internet forum where communications is limited by posting back and forward and not real time conversations, i will have to guess what the rest of the setup you have.
You mentioned that you have a laptop, and with Nvidia 940m so im taking a wild guess that you have: windows 8, 64bits version, with intel CPU, probably 3rd generations and since you only mentioned AO so i assuming that this error only occurs when playing AO and not other 3d games. So my troubleshooting begins with all the assumed info i have guessed, therefor the successful rate to resolves this issue is lesser than 15%

Please try following: Since you have a laptop and most laptop runs on battery they have something called battery save crap. Make sure the laptop runs on highest performance by plug in the power cable, then go to intel graphic properties you will see this icon on the window task bar near the clock when inside intel graphic properties, go to power options tab check if it is on highest performance. After that click on the 3D settings tab, choose "custom settings" or something like that, dont allow the intel decides anything about 3D quality or performance, instead let AO decides by choosing "application settings" on anisotropic and aa, next is save settings and close intel graphic properties. When this is done try the steps that Wakizaka provided again to see if it help.

Make sure to enable to nvidia gpu activity monitor so check if AO is utilising it.

This is enabled by going to the Nvidia control panel and going under the desktop drop down and ticking "Display GPU activity icon in the notification area"

You can also run AO by default with the 940M by adding it as a custom program and assigning it to the 940M. The new engine is very badly optimised though so a lower end mobile card is not going to run it very well.

I had similar issue with Diablo3 back in the days when D3 was new, people on blizz forum found a workaround by adding command string in the D3 exe which forced the D3 client to runs on Nvidia and not Intel, then some weeks later Blizz officially released a patch which fixed the issue completely.

If other 3d games works fine then the problem is within AO. We can find workaround to fix this, but at the end of day it is Fcs job to fix this.
Since AO is so old, i guessing AO client think intel is the main and only gpu in existence in the laptop. Fc should take a closer look into this matter and make a hotfix to tell AO that some laptop have multiple gpus, and fix this problem once and for all. Because according to my observations, i have seen quite a few people with similar problems as the OP.
