I was wondering, will the new engine raise the FPS-cap in AO?
It's currently limited at 100. Which is fine, as long as it stays at 100. :) (not always easy with new gpu's and old engines).
If you do raise the cap, be aware of the typical "physics" "bug" that occurs in games with FPS capped at 125. Dunno if its just the quake-based engines, but you can jump slightly higher because of this.
Maybe you could test the performance, engine vs engine? default graphics settings in both engines, kite all mobs in pande so you have a lot of activity and then take a note of the performance?
I simply just HATE low fps. :p
128th Woot!
I'm not sure how representative this will be of AO's post-engine performance, but going into DX10 AoC I can hit 140 FPS with everything at minimum. With everything maxed, looking in the middle of Tortage, I get ~50-60 FPS.
That's with an i5 2500k, 8GB DDR3 1600, HD7950, all at stock frequencies. Ingame settings are 1920x1080 borderless fullscreen, DX10, 3500m view distance, FXAA HQ, High Shadows, SSAO, everything else maxed, 16x AF, 100% high quality viewdistance, 1000m particle view distance, 500m NPC view distance, 1000m grass view distance, 256m ground quality view distance, 100m animation high quality view distance.
Going outside the gates to where there's water and grass, I get above 60 (63ish) FPS. Logged onto my mid-level character in Conarch Village where there's more viewdistance available, some particle effects from fires, etc, still around 60-63 FPS. Running through Conall's Valley it hovered between 50-63, mostly around the high 50s. Sitting on the bridge above the Cimmerian settlement halfway through the zone and looking out over the large valley, it's around 40ish FPS, though turning 90 degrees and facing up the valley instead of down it gives me 70ish FPS, so definitely just due to draw distance.
Unfortunately I can't test raids or dungeons. Level 32 is my highest character, so no raids, and I've never done a dungeon on AoC. I do get a pretty consistent 100 FPS in AO. I think I've seen it go down to 50 during Iraid Pandes. And random dips to 30 when it's loading in textures, naturally.
I'm getting the most awkward deja vu right now. Oh well, maybe someday it happens.
This is so true Im still laughing at it. :D Its unfortunate but a lot of people will not bother to read the forums or post due to all the troll baiting and just inaccurate off-topic posts. Trying to get any accurate information out of the forums is very difficult. Many here pass off their opinions as facts and it muddy's the waters terribly. In the professional forums many links are marked as outdated when in fact they are relevant to froobs but are not presented as such. Take these forums for what they are and who inhabits them. Too bad the loudest and most obnoxiouis get the most attention.Quote:
You just chomped on some huge troll bait and got reeled in by a troll who then placed you on his troll fire where he served you to other trolls, troll style. Stop feeding them. There are a lot of idiots and grumbly grumblesons on this forum (we have good reasons too, some are blown out of proportion)
As if you devs dont have enough on your plate, any way you can improve the forums? How about limiting posts to 20 a month per account ;-)
Frankly, a lot of people that post here with such directed negativity shouldn't be shielded from treatment like this. I see it as par for the course. Their only purpose is to crap on everything and anything. It's only fitting that they get splattered by their own spew once in a while.
polish site for AO - runs by fans (me for example) has more updates then official site. Meh, somewhat fail me thinks.
+1 LOL
Especially when the loudest and most miserable of the lot either don't even currently play AO or threaten to cancel subscription at least once per month.
Insanity, craziness or madness is a spectrum of behaviors characterized by certain abnormal mental or behavioral patterns.
Albert Einstein once said "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Think about this quote for a second and ask yourself, does this quote apply to the way you post on the forums?
The tone of posts on these fourms makes it dangerous for any FC employee to post anything without someone flaming them. Any attepmt to show progress or easter eggs about npe/engine etc is met with blatant disdain and disbelief.
It is the most INSANE thing to spend any money or more importantly time on this game and forums if you do not like it AS IS. The way I see it is that I am paying for peoples salaries to keep the game online. If proposed changes come fantastic if not I'll keep playing the game AS IS because THAT is what I am paying for.
I'm pretty sure Psyonis's post was a joke btw Psikie..
The problem isn't that they attempt to show progress or whatever, but it's that they've basically shown the same for 6 years, and I keep hearing that we should let these new guys try at it a bit before we bite their head off. Well, it's too late to try. We need to see some actual progress, not just some screenshots, albeit pretty ones.
Once it's not profitable enough and they decide to shut AO down I wish Funcom would release the intellectual property (and all the source code) of Anarchy Online to the community. :)
i for one would be interested in working on the engine (and future engines) in my spare time, love the IP...it is unique.
Add new artificial intelligence (and structure to improve it over time) to the mobs/npcs in the game etc.
In my opinion both AI and Graphics should be more modular and decoupled so switching it out would be like replacing a car engine.
You are right. I don't pay for it. I come to the forum and read posts because I am still a fan of the game as it used to be, not how it is nor necessarily the company personalities or policies that govern its future, and my hope for it to be improved.
My post was an exasperated response to a nonprofessional post by the face of this very game, and most importantly, this product that other people do currently pay for. Irregardless whether the game director's reply is in defense to a proportionally inflammatory comment, the game director represents a business and its product or services at all times, but most importantly when interacting within a publicly accessible forum be it a virtual forum or a live press conference. The point is that, once again as we have seen, the representatives that Funcom present to its paying customers believe that they can interact on the same level as its critics and that just should not ever be.
Am I defending the instigator? No, I am not. But I am more disgusted when a professional puts professionalism aside as he is representing a product I still have a passion for. It makes me believe that Funcom isn't even trying, nor cares and if they don't they might as well close shop as their shares continue to plummet.
Well damn. This thread escalated quickly.
I've been typing, deleting, retyping, and then abandoning possible responses for a few pages. In the end I'll just say this:
We haven't really had as much of an opportunity to communicate directly with the new CD as I think we'd like. I also wonder if the same can be said from Joel's perspective. Juggling 3 (at least) games can't be easy and now a new family member as well. Doesn't exactly give you a good opportunity to get to know a community that is already kinda closed off due to years of bitter cynicism.
I think it would be good for everyone if we did a meet-and-greet at some point, when things calm down for Joel. I don't really know what form it would take, I've seen other game staff do AMAs on Reddit, or open up forum threads for dialogue for a few hours where they reply in-thread as responses get posted, or wander around a hub of activity in-game (main cities for instance) talking to people. I also know that we've had Means and others attend GSP parties in the past. Maybe some inspiration can be taken from all these ideas.
Just my 2 cents.
There is nothing insane about seeing the potential AO harbours and constantly wishing for it to be exploited. If certain measures were taken by FC to push the game forward, we wouldn't be in this situation right now of having a cut dev team armed with very little in the way of funding for advertising whilst pushing out the same promises that we've been fed for over 6 years.
If you wanted people to only for AO if they wanted it 'as-is' I can bet you a huge sum of money at least 25% of the already dwindling population would just up and leave.
