"Each Clon**** Notum Cannon is capable of launching 500 Omni-Tek employees into orbit in a single pulse. Dead or alive at launch, the result at the receiving end is consistent." - Zeephonz
I kinda think I recall, however very vaguely, reading about them somewhere.
I'll have to wrack my memory to see if I can recall what and where. Almost think it was an NPC somewhere.
Again, this is a vague recollection and could be wrong.
For the time being, lets assume there is no information (but please, keep looking).
How big do you all think the payload should be?
Is it confirmed that the payload is a solid? I've always assumed (ever since I learned what they did, but long after I first saw them) that they shot up a contained gas, say is some nanobot-controlled force field or something. So barrel diameter (or rail gun diameter, w/e) is...6 feet wide? Assume a 10-foot long "round" and you have a volume of ~280 ft^3.
Also the only documented amount of notum being shipped off is '1 million tonnes' as listed on the timeline on the website.
If 1 million tons of Notum are being exported, that would mean:
Slightly more than a quarter of a Ton per shot.Code:Tons Fired Tons per day lbs per day total fires lbs per shot
1,000,000 2739.726027 5,479,452.055 10,368 528.50
Thanks for the point toward the lore on this, Raggy.
There is the math I couldn't be bothered doing!
One thing that irks me about the notum cannons though is this:
Where exactly is the notum being fired to? It can't be the Morningstar simply because the velocity of the shipment would tear through the station, and besides we already have trans-orbital landers everywhere so that'd be a bit pointless.
Shooting it to neighbouring systems would be slow and cumbersome when Omni-tek already has a vast fleet of FTL transports.
So where is it actually going?
As the quintessential Omni-Trans guy, this is how I saw it.
The Cannons are firing it into space. It's being docked with by a smaller Tug style ship which then redirects it the larger export freighter. Docks with the freighter, drops it's load, and goes back to rendezvous with the next payload.
Considering the weight, this would be more cost effective than using a traditional vertical launch with that much cargo weight on board.
An interesting theory.
But lets look at the rate of fire and the velocity of the shot for a moment.
The Notum Cannons fire off 3 rounds at the same point in the sky (they don't rotate), roughly every 10 seconds. Using Earths gravitational pull and atmospherics for this example (even though Rubi-ka is larger and has a more chaotic atmosphere...) the payload needs to be moving at 11.2 KM/per second.
The Tug ship would need to grab it's load which is moving at 34 times the speed of sound, move out of the way and the next ship would need to be ready within 10s.
My alternative theory is this: There is no explanation, it's nanobots, I ain't gotta explain sh*t.
You're saying 10 seconds per shot.
Cora told me 25 seconds per shot.
I'm clocking 18 seconds per shot.
Did you measure the 10 seconds, or was that just a guess? I'm now getting concerned over the timing.
If you or anyone else gets a chance to stop by, Could you time it for me? It's critical to the numbers I'm crunching and I'm worried it might be a client side effect which might vary based on the individual clients and not the server.
I haven't checked your math, but escape velocity is the object's launch speed so that it can overcome gravity. It definitely slows down over time, so it might not be moving so fast when it reaches the upper atmosphere. Consider that modern space launch vehicles use multiple stages to get more fully away from earth.
I see it like this: The ships would have a large lane dedicated for intercepting the payloads. It would be like this:

The info disc in Clon**** says:
"Nevertheless, Omni-Tek still exports one and a half million tons of raw notum off the planet annually, and it all happens from the export facility in Clon****."
Where's this Info Disk, Red? I looked and couldn't find one.
At the exposed notum pipeline to the east of the cannons. It's marked "Pipeline Trailer" on AoRK.
Red's Lore Citation says 1.5 million tons Raw.
Raggy's Lore Citation says 1.0 million tons Refined.
Is 1.5m Tons Raw then refined down to 1.0m before shipment?
Is 1.5m Tons Raw and 1.0m Tons refined both shipped?
Thoughts on the (potentially) conflicting lore?
