The majority of new players are former froobs. There is no better advertisement for buying the expansions than playing with people who have them. Funcom would be costing themselves subscriptions if they did that.
What about our bank toons?
Saying it in this thread too.
I would pay for server access and if the fee were nominal enough I would pay for many of my friends too.
I think I would be less inclined to complain too :p
I see no reason why they should kill the in-game pooulation anymore than it already is, and as said by Jjin many paying customers are former froobs, that chose to upgrade their toon with the expansions.
If it were not for the froob program I would never have started to play it, I would not have become addicted to it, which ultimately led me to upgrade my account with all expansions and now I have 3 paid accounts.
Only because of the froob option, that lead me have a taste of the game for free.
The froob program are the savior of AO, and shutting them off from all the rest of us, would be devastating to all of us imho.
They contribute to the society, but don't have the power to compete... Win/win situation for paying customers.
I really, really, really can't see a single negative thing about froobs.
here is what i think about your suggestion:

Win/ win? I finally upgraded. I don't like it and I am glad I still have my main account at fr00bs, I have lost my alternative toons account as that is what I have upgraded. End of the year I have paid for I will not renew.
So yes, they got a year out of me. They lost out long term on my subscription because, being paid up is not what it is cracked up to be.
People get trapped into it. Why do you think there is so much bitterness on these forums? We love our characters and get very attached to them.
They used that against us.
I would pay to have use of a "fr00b" only server. I would like it so that each paying user of that old server can add one more account as either an alt or a good friend. So a two accounts for the price of one arrangement would be a good selling point.
So if it is player base you are worried about, get that word of mouth working and let us push FC to merge the RK1 and RK2 "normal" or maybe paid players to one server and the fr00bs to the other.
I really don't like the expansions they are just so wrong is so many ways.
There are a few things like the org channel that should carry over but you get that as a fr00b anyway.
Expansions had glitter and they hooked the XP junkies they are full of gimmicks and they come close and maybe just cross the line of cheating.
Fr00bs can't PvP, you get maybe one or two ganks and they won't let you anymore. So I am surprised that the PvPers are not clammoring for more fr00b content so that there are more for them to fight with.
Anyway, unless we have some drastic changes that reverse the damages done. Due to, the blatant prostituting of the game that we are now reaping the fruit of; this game is doomed. It is a matter of time if nothing is done to change it.
Merging the paid players and having a fr00b server might bring some people back and bring in some new ones. Gives more long term options to players and more of each type to play with.
I'll just have to disagree with you there...
If I had only RK as it were once, I don't think I would have played it for 3 years, and still liked trying new stuff I haven't tried before and going to places I haven't been yet. That's after 3 years of allmost daily gaming for a total of several hundred in-game hours.
I can ofc only speak for myself and on behalf of all those I have talked to in org and so on, but I have never to this day, heard anyone but you regret having upgraded to paid account...
I'm not saying there aren't more, but I have never heard it from anyone before.
Everyone I know that have upgraded have been thrilled about all the new possibilites and places to go.
Jesus, Xpyhos, even froobs are making you feel inadequate now?
NO, more froobs, the best the game gets and the longest its future expectancy.
Team with some froobs once in a while.. u'll see they are fresh air.
NO.
Agreed, for as long as it took to look around. Empty cold places. Interesting to look at briefly.
Kite hill, Hecks, Perks, more months of item hunting added? Lag filled ugly interior cities. Rediculously easy twinking. Challenge stripped away. Game made boring.
Exclusivity from friends? Influencing others to join this with my very presence?
How long were you a fr00b? Did you get past the 100 to ~135 doldrums?
Also you haven't been speaking to the various people or listening to those that have left. I know about 10-12 fr00bs that used to be paid players, they say, "this is where the real game is at." Those are some pretty dedicated players, to have built up 200+ toons, then closed their accounts when they had "been there done that," and started again from scratch as fr00bs.
Some I know could afford the game -easily- for instance, "Funcom does not deserve my financial patronage, I will not pay for a product that is so defective." *shrugs*
Have the fr00b (expansion free) server voluntary with a donation option and see how many migrate!
Disagree, but even if I did agree with you, it's still a lot more places to go in addition to the places on RK. It's not like you loose the possibility to still be on RK.... Heck I still spend a lot of my time on RK, just because I happen to like RK a lot.
Bot camp, Cyborgs, Ip, months of camping for armor, lag filled OA and so on.... What's new... :p
I'm still strugling to find a way to get high ql symbs on my keeper... and I will probably still need some months before I have all I need to just get a ql260 brain symb in...
Some things have been made easier to twink, but new stuff has come to once again set the bar a little higher, and I'm willing to bet there will be new symbiants, equipment, armor or whatever coming, that will require the new ability items to get on.
Lost me there... Did not understand it. Probably my lack of understanding.
I were froob for 6-8 months or so iirc, but I did not level a toon past 80 or so. Tried out various toons and so on during that period, but wanted to see what all that SL stuff was about, and never regretted it. Not because of the uber buffs, perks or whatever, but because AO suddenly became a lot bigger, more complex and with more possiblities for me to customize and ofc enhance my character.
I've never met any of those... but I fail to see what makes them more dedicated than paying customers, they just choose to play for free with the limited choices that follows :)
Yet, it's not more defective than they are very dedicated to it... Even in it's most limited state :)
What it all boils down to is personal taste and so on ofc.
But I would really have to vote no to putting froobs on a dedicated server, as it would hurt those of us that actually pay's for the servers, maintenance, and evolving of the game more, than it would benefit a very minor minority.
That it's a very little part of the (paying) population is ofc a guesstimate based on my own experiences in the game.
Another reason I don't want froobs to be on a dedicated server is that it kinda defeats the purpose about letting people try out the game for free, but feel and see what they missing, when they constantly have to play with and fight against people with expansions.
If you were talking about a dedicated server with the original RK only, but where players would still have to pay the monhtly fee, then I would have no issue with it. Of course there should be no froobs (non paying players) on this server for the reasons mentioned above.
My motivatons for my reasoning is of course that I (in general) like AO in it's entirety and I therefore have the highest interest in seeing as many new paying customers as possible, to keep the game going and evolving and what you suggests would not help with that imho.
Mostly how a froob upgrades to paid is they'll see a keeper/shade or paid teammate with some weird items they've never seen and ask what it is, how to get it, etc., then they get excited and want to be a keeper/shade or have that cool item and then pay for the game ;)
Hard to do that in a crowd of 100% froobs >.>
...and there was much rejoicing. :p
Seriously though, this is the worst suggestion ever. Froobs upgrading is essential to the health of this games playerbase. Sticking them on their own server a very bad idea.
Making an oldschool, pre SL server available only to paid players would probably do quite well though and I know a lot of older players that would come back just for that.
It's a weird and paranoid world you live in.
You played as a froob for ages, so you knew exactly what was coming when you upgraded. The froob program is a try-before-you-buy scheme, no more. If you cancel and go back to being a froob, FC got a bunch of cash off you that they wouldn't have otherwise, you got a feeling of righteous indignation, and we get some amusement taking a few gentle digs at you. Sounds win/win to me :)
i am with the others on this is the worst idea EVER. Paid RK only with perks might be kinda cool.
New players ARE the lifeblood of this game. We may feel high and mighty with our uber phats and jaded hatetehn00b attitudes but the truth is every froob that upgrades is refreshing the game.
Recently met a fresh player, just upgraded and was bashing some hecks solo and having a hell of a hard time at it.. after all he was still froobed to the max. We pulled him in team because we were powerleveling an alt of mine. Since i had my hands free alot I talked and gave him introduction to SL, concepts, armor and weapons recomendations, taught him about research and perks.
He took to it like a fish to water, was very appreciative and frankly, afterwards I felt good to have helped a new player to the expansions get a good start.
We need to remember that. Alot of us WERE froobs at one point. Heck even recently I played as afroob for 3 months because my paids were locked and money was tight. Ahh it was damn nice to get my paids reactivated.. FFS I hated being a froob after being paid. I could never go back. Its too pointless.
no, it's nothing like any of that at all.
it's just I'm sick of having my LFT clearly say "220 inf / AXP" yet only to get a tell and/or invite "Wanna Borgs?"
Fr00bs were created for a reason..to give people a chance to test the game out..without paying, without a 30 day trial. The idea is to get you hooked, so you WOULD pay (this perpetuating the game more with needed cash).
I was agasnt this when ti started, since they put littel restrictions on it level wise. if they had it lock out at say level 100 or so..id make more sense. what it created..was a HUGE pool pf people who wont pay (or are unlikely to pay), who level..wander around the game..and complain about various facetsfo the game (that they are not paying for). shallI mention about proplr complaning a froob cant use a player shop? or the global market system?
Peeps miss the point what fr00bs are. This company needs paying accounts..so eventually..you start to pay if your interested.
Slapping a entier server..that is eseintially pay free, would be silly. More resources..time and effort put in by the company to tech support it (and belive me..it will need it). All for something they dont get a dime from (andpay more cash for to run).
Dont think so mate. Be a nice idea...but hardley likely. Companies dont make games (and even online games) out of the goodness of theri hearts...they wahnt cash. As it is, AO seems to be the only one currently that allows you access to a large chuink of the game..without restriction (no pay..doesnt run out).
A paid server for RK only...yes..Id agree some would like that (smaller payments per month.say 9.99 or so), but again...were stuck with resources being drawn..and if ti was RK only..that community would start crying for more content (more resources).
Paid server without expansions, I would subscribe for life.
Re: see signature.
Oh and nerf borgs, bring in a TL6 dungeon and fix the old ones. :p
Fonebone: I subscribed as most of org had and I wanted to be able to help there too. Well org is gone and I have paid a year in advance.
