I have no idea what caused the hen to become a hen, but alot of factors in it's life must have caused it to evolve into a hen.
So I still say that the hen must have been first

It does.
While in the egg, it developes itself from a embryo into a chicken.
Looking at it from a human prespective, the egg would combine its genes with the ones from the sperm cell, and during this is it where the embryo would evolve into something else than "intended". Same would go for a hen/egg. The genes/sperm/egg cell could have been evolved or altered, which would make a hen out of a (quite) similar bird.
And no, no evolution happens during the generation (which is affected), it affects the coming generations.

As for what and when made specifically the hen, it depends how and where you look on the evolution: During the long time of evolution from amoebas to todays species, or "from a flying creature to specifically the hen"

I agree partially Techno.

In the case of the Hen and the Egg, the Egg Indeed did come first. As the evoloutionary process you refered to allows progression of species through generations. The first full fledged member of the Hen specied was indeed from an Egg, so "The egg came first".

In a sense of life itself on this planet. You have to look at what you consider an "egg". The forming of life through a single cell organism, you may state that the organism has no egg and was created in essence without a fetal stage. But you can also argue that being a single cell organism progressing to a state of animated life we would recognize today was it's fetal period, and it was indeed an "egg" itself. It's all very grey when speaking in terms of life itself and origins.

In the case of the hen, I know numerous studies that theorize that the hen was a "victim" of punctuated equilibrium and not simple evoulution to a more ground-friendly bird. Having the genetic mutation at some point in their line where the ground-ridden species was more successful in foraging for food and surviving the cold weather.

Just want to clarify something here.

The egg was made first (you could call it a prototype). Noone remember who actually made this, or what the original use was. Insertion into bodycavities was on use that was fairly popular.

Then the hen and the rooster was made, by God.

The rooster and hen got real pissed one night and then the hen laid some eggs. She never told any of us how the hell she got 'em in there. Having no hands and all I mean.
