    Let's Play Rollerball

The South Rubi-Ka Society proudly presents the first Rubi-Ka Rollerball League championship.

Rollerball is a sport that combines elements of roller derby, motocross, and ice hockey. Two teams play opposite each other in a battle of skill, will and brute strength. The players skate inside an arena using motorcycles and towing rigs in order to maintain speed. The object of the game is to pick up a tennis ball-sized metal sphere which is fired onto the circular course at high speeds, and to deposit it into the opponent's goal.

We are currently accepting team applications to join the league. So come on, let's play Rollerball!

The RRL (The Rubi-Ka Rollerball League) is a fantasy league for AO, meaning that the games will be "played" offline, via email using a standard formula. Weekly results and league tables will be posted on the FunCom message board each Monday for the duration of the championship. It has been designed to be easy and fun for the participants and perhaps offer the citizens of Rubi-Ka the opportunity for a friendly wager or two. The minimum requirement from each team is just two emails, though there is no limit to how much input you may wish to provide.

    Regulations:

    1. Anyone interested in participating must first of all form a team.
Ideally a team should represent a guild, but other forms of association will be considered like, for instance, the regular Rompa bar patrons or Residents of Rome Blue High-rise 3.
    2. Participating guilds or other associations will need to select a team captain to handle all the correspondence and a team name, something on the lines of "Omni Exec Raiders" or "Rompa Bar Bears".

    3. They will also need to design the team. A Rollerball team is built on four attributes: Strength, Speed, Skill and Tactics. Each team has 10 points to between these attributes. You must spend at least 1 point for each attribute. For instance "The Shadow Corp Ninjas" might allocated their point as follows: Strength=2, Speed=2, Skill=4 and Tactics=2.

    4. When you have a captain, name and team design, you can submit a team application via an email to gsoylent@hotmail.com Applications will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

    5. Once we have a complete list of participating teams, we will draw up the schedule of matches for the entire season. This will be sent to the team captains together with a profile (the attributes) of each team.

    6. Using this information each team captain must then send us the game plan for the whole season in one email. This must be completed before any of the matches are played. Team captains may send us further updates on game plans after the season has started if they wish to, but no team will be allowed into the league without this initial input.

    7. Each match consists of four quarters, the results of which will be determined by quarter-by-quarter using a simple formula. For each quarter the captain will have to specify whether the team will take an "Offensive" "Defensive " or "Balanced" stance. This game plan information will remain confidential.

    8. Additionally each team gets one, and only one, Joker they can play per season. The Joker can be played on any one match of the regular season to add +2 to the final score in that match. Thus if the actual score were 2-2 and your team had previously specified to use the Joker on this match, the final score would be 4-2. As with game plans, the team captain is required to select on which match to play the Joker at the start of the season but he can update this information at any time. You cannot use the Joker to help another team. Information on how or when a team uses its Joker is also kept confidential.

    9. The deadline for updates to game plan or Joker updates being the Friday before the match in question is to be played. Rulings as to whether the updates arrived in time or not are entirely up to the organisers’ discretion.

    10. At the end of the regular season, if there are more than one team on top of the league, there will be a series direct elimination playoffs. If there are an odd number of teams, a wildcard will be randomly selected from second best placed teams.

That should just about cover it for now. Please feel free to contact me at the above email address or in-game if you have any further queries.

I've been asked why we chose to restrict an out-of-game event to just Rubi-Ka 1 players. Haven't Rubi2 citizens been discriminated against more than enough?

The main reason is that, while this may be a purely an out-of-game event at the moment, we hope to build on the Rollerball League concept and stage some in-game tie-in events as the season progresses. If we committed to support both dimensions, organising these in-game events could become awkward.

I do regret this restriction was necessary.
