How long are characters stored if the account is inactive?
Someone at funcom posted a reply some time ago (before the latest wipe) and - to the best of my recollection - old chars are deleted 3 months after the account goes inactive. An account goes inactive the day after the last day that you have paid for.
So if you paid for a 6-mo stint on 1/1/XX and got a lvl 100 crat named abigail, but got totally frustrated with the continual 'bug fixes' that broke more than they fixed and the total lack of customer support, so you canceled your account on 2/1/XX. You can still play until your time runs out, and you do. On 7/2/XX, you can no longer play on your account, because your pre-paid time has run out. Funcom then pulls a 180 and becomes a customer-friendly company. They start listening to the customers, provide timely feedback, and intoduce patches that actually fix more problems than they cause. You hear of all this (from your friend who is totally addicted to the game), and decide to re-activate your account. It's now 9/25/XX (almost 3 months after your time ran out), and you re-activate your account, and behold! Your char is still there!
Unfortunaly, your char is now totally gimped because of all the random and arbitrary changes funcom made that made all your IP allotment wasted and pointless.

Long story short, 3 months after your pre-paid time is up.
The pen is mightier than the sword, you say? Very well, get out your pens, essay writers, and prepare to have your logic tested by steel!
