Thumbs down There will never be large scale battles

Well I was happy tonight to find another event was happening on RK2. My team were out at the cyborg camp in PW when we heard of a GM recruiting people at Tir grid.
As I got to Tir, there she was, with around 30 people around her. She told us to go to MMD, so off I went. Once I got there it was very busy, and MMD of all places with those damn trees everywhere, frame rate hit rock bottom.
Another GM called all clan members to follow her away from the grid exit to try reduce the lag. A 3rd GM was recruiting omni members by the grid. This was going to be a fight to lay claim on MMD.
I turned the graphics settings right down to try smooth things out, which helped a lot unless I looked at the crowd of omni's.
As soon as we were called to attack everything just crashed in a huge wave of lag. I couldn't log back in, and still can't now 30 mins later. If things aren't seriously improved there will be no large scale battles in this game that are playable.

Got a few pics of the GMs trying to coordinate this.

I discovered the portal to another dimension!

    I am a Gauntlet Adventurer.

I strive to improve my living conditions by hoarding gold, food, and sometimes keys and potions. I love adventure, fighting, and particularly winning - especially when there's a prize at stake. I occasionally get lost inside buildings and can't find the exit. I need food badly.

Well at least they are attempting to do some events on Rubi-Ka 2. Lets try not complain too much about the events we get, as the are few and far between, and we may not see as many if we compain about what we get. I try to give due credit when it is earned, and even though lag was a problem, they did try to do something on our Rubi-Ka 2, so I applaude them for that.

I agree, but an event that doesn't work is almost more frustrating than no event at all.

    Angry sorry but

That event was a joke..im a fairly high soldier with apprentice title and i went to the event which were about control over mmd...b4 war began we were told that victory would depend on last man standin..after that chaos...the omnis are apperently standin in the 25% zone in their end..suddenly the "clan gm general rushes in" to the omnis...not alot of the clanner grasps what is going on and is just standin around waitin for the gm to speak again..since lagged keept them from seein him chargin....the omnis are on him instantly...i think to my self well i better do my part and target the omni gm...but HES STILL IN 75% zone so i cant shhot him while thr omnis **** our gm..then i crash..and is havin a hard time getting back online when i do (about 5 min later) i can still c war going on..i grap a mp heal pet and head out quickly killin a 147 enforcer a 138 soldier and some fixer..another 151 enforcer runs from me...(love mp heal pet ;D) suddenly there are no omnis they are either dead or hidin in 75% zone...the gm calls us to him at grid and then proceeds to tell us that omni has won mmd because clan gm died ?!?...ALOT of ppl couldnt believe their ears omni and clan alike...then i log on mirc and a gm from event comes in and tells me

<gms namet> let me assure you that the winners were dominating the entire battle....bull and there are around 70 players to confirm that ;p omnis wasnt near total control and this wasnt near the concept of last man standin...quite frankly i feel raped

Unhappy My take on this "Event"...

What's the point of running an event and telling people one thing and then doing another?
If it was last man standing then quite frankly the Clans now own MMD. I personally stayed on after the GMs left and a group of Clanners feeling like I did (betrayed by our leaders) held MMD from ALL Omni forces for at least 3 hours...

As for the "Event" as far as I could see Omni won the initial battle because the Clan GM ran foolishly into battle, without making sure anyone on the clan side knew what she was going to do...

By the time the clanners had managed to battle the lag and the fact that 90% of them couldn't log into the zone (like me) our GM had gone out in a blaze of glory on her suicide run.......

Anyway if anyone asks me in game who has control of MMD I'll reply "Clan of course, we won a great battle there, despite the cowardise and stupidity of the CoT representitives."

I would also like to ask if it was even possible for the Clans to win this conflict or was it planned that Omni would win in advance?

I believe this is down to a bandwidth issue, I use single channel ISDN (7.5k/s max bandwidth). Now with funcom's netcode that is no where near enough to cope with 100+ people charging about yet alone fighting each other. The people that did manage to stay and fight were probably the people that have Cable modem, ADSL, DSL, etc..
The last man standing idea was stupid though, there is a save terminal 20 feet from the battle with a reclaim next to it. Both clan and omni can save at it, so once someone dies they can charge straight back in to battle. Hence the battle could have gone on hours if the GMs didn't decide to end it like they did.

I have no problems with the GMs ending the fight, in order to declare a winner, but just giving it to Omni without even a proper fight, was just plain silly.

I found that although I killed 1 Omni person, my time was totally wasted there, and I felt I could of better spent my time over at the temple in Greater Tir County, where I could solo hunt and get past level 47 where I've been for about a week

Regardless of what anyone says, THAT FIASCO was not an event, it was just a gathering of players from either side, so the GMs could put on a little show of fighting (our GM being slaughtered), so that they could claim (in truth?) that the Omni's won the fight.

That is not an event, it's nothing more than having a broadcast on the evening news. But considering we don't get any storyline channels for reports, I can see why they had to gather players there, instead of just giving out news reports.

I'm am so not satisfied, or happy.

Well, there would never be any real large scale battles which would take place with a ton of characters... for two simple reasons.. line fighting is really no longer a real viable option (neither is mass mob fighting, that is.. absence a kind of line formation) in the freaking 30,000 years into the future. I mean the last time there was line fighting was about 300 years ago in real time. What probably should have happened was squad vs squad. Like in band of brothers, or Saving private ryan, or I dunno, even that movie star ship troopers was squad to squad fighting.

But anyway.. sorry to disagree with you but I don't think it's bandwith issue. ISDN is only a little bit faster than 56k, at the very most maybe 10% faster (thats a real stat I got from wired) Alot of people I've talked to that know more than I do in regards to coding and what not, say that AO in itself is really not an efficient piece of code. It will eat up memory and it won't release it after it is done using it.. Try playing AO, then quitting, then starting it up again. You will notice a kind of lagginess.. that's not the traffic of the net' thats really your machine trying to operate using less memory than before. The only way to fix that is to reboot.

I have a cable, and with dslreports.com Ive been marked at being able to download two megs in under 30 seconds. Don't ask me for a stat on that one =\ because I can't remember the up and down cap. But anyway... they just need to tidy up their code and it should be better..

    My 2cents

Ok, Well, let me say this, I have laptop 1gighz with 256 megs ram and a 16 meg video card integrated in it, I use a 56k modem and dial in. Even on RK1 the only time I hit lag is when I grid into trade or whompa from ent to trade and only if I have my view distances maxed out. That problem is the "video lag" which is the time it takes for the system to draw the pretty little pictures. It had nothing to do with the connection to the net. The netcode isn't as bad as you might think, its more the display code, and as far as saying that AO doesnt release the memory is incorrect. With both windows 2000 and windows 98 and even xp for that matter, the program releases the memory but it doesnt instantly release the memory. I would say that it takes at least two minutes from the time the visual program closes to the time the clientr.exe actually releases all the used memory. Also if you want to get in right away and are on XP, or 2000 you can go into your task manager, and under the processes tab, sort the colums by memory used, you will see that clientr.exe is using most of your memory. Either wait the few minutes for it to release, or end task on the process. The system appears to hang while the memory is being forced to release, but the system responds within 30 seconds

    Question Laptop and AO

Ok I also use my laptop at time to run AO about the same as you (1 gig, 256, 16mb graphics - Dell Inspiron 4000) and when things get busy then it lags like a dog.

Not to say that you are wrong ( I have a habit of nuking computers - built in EMP ;p ), but I also get the same with my workstation (1.3 gig, 256. 32mb graphics - Athlon).

    Thumbs down Memory usage

Most of you will know that when you log out of get disconnected from AO a program called clientr.exe will still be running for around 20 seconds before it clears itself. Usually this program uses anything from 100k-200k of memory which decreases slowly until the program ends at just under 100k. When I crashed out of that event clientr.exe was using 320k of memory. This took around 30 seconds to clear.

So anyone have any suggestions why I could not log back in? The fade in began and I could see people beginning to appear, but then it just kicked me before everything loaded.

I have more than triple the recommended requirements for playing AO except for my connection and graphics card (Geforce2 MX). Either fix the code or state the actual requirements to play this game!

Welcome RK2 to what events in AO are all about - Lag.

Why you guys on RK2 are clammering for them I have no idea.

I've yet to see an event work out with any intelligence. Every event has been a fiasco, from The escort of Radiman (where FC made sure to get Radiman killed by dropping out of the team he was in to stop us from saving him yet again and by /terminating himself), to the capture of Portman (given to a guild that were only interested in bein retards despite other guilds putting alot more work in to trying to do it properly [Captfallout may be a whining moron but at least he probably deserved this one]
, to the Trial (were Aberic was instructed to give a speech about the planet talking to him by a GM and after his 'exile' was added back into Omni by a GM [Yep, he didn't use a form]), TAG debates (which for some dumb reason got held in a 25% zone in Omni-HQ), The Convey attack that resulted in several large guilds working together but didn't get the recognitiion that the badly orgastrated PW event had.

Events in this game are badly run, and are usually unavailable to those not in North America.

Blah to events, Blah to GM's and Blah to RK2......
