Thread: Refocusing the Community work

  1. #81
Szentasha, I understand completely that the community breathes life into the game. That's everything I work with. However, the community is not only the official bulletin board, and I believe it can be just as strong with the focus on other things.

I do not believe that the community can survive on the bulletin board alone, however. And that is basically everything that we can do without this change of focus. Too much time is spent on being technicians instead of communicators, and we want to change that.

Blix, please, Rosethorn is offering something that I know many others appreciate, and is doing a lot of work on the site. If you have nothing better to say to her, please keep it to yourself.

Not true of our site anyway. IGN is the largest game site on the web. I don't think we get pop-ups for the most part. I think in December there was one, but that one is long gone.

Understood Blix - but you may have a little better shot getting them answered by submitting them to me for my weekly Q&A, especially if its a bug/gameplay/future of the game type of issue.

The developer Q&A comes directly from Cz and company. I submit the questions players care the most about and they answer them.

As for being an advertisement for my site, Cz already did that. Part of what is happening is more support for the fan sites - we are an officially endorsed site.

CZ, I don't address this to you cause you're one guy working your @$$ off. Ain't your fault, bro.

OK, FunCom I love you to death guys but have you snapped?

You just POed the entire RP community (roleplay)

You just POed the entire social community (Social, Player Polls, etc)

You just POed the every single person that had an idea or an interest in the life of this game (New patch, Suggestion, WoRK, Test forums)

You just POed recruiting guilds, and non-guilded folks looking for options (Organizations)

You just POed the PvP community (NW, PVP, Tara)

You're probably going to PO everyone that needs to buy or sell (Let's face it you're all but saying you're closing the markets too)

OK so we can ALWAYs make boards elsewhere for these things, but...having them here gave us all a feel that you actuallyhad some care for the community. I'm surprised, sad, and a little disappointed.

Look at EVE. Their Polaris program, similar to the ARK program, includes for moderators. If you can't handle the load, ask some of us! There are plenty of responsible people here who'd volunteer.

No, we're not going to do that with the RP community. We intend to stay close to it, and feed it as much as possible.
For me that translates to, "Yes I will show up in reet retreat evry now and then and hand out muffins while doing a few /disco's"

Some of us would love to RP any other palces than in the night clubs, sur they are a nice chillout/fun places but if your idea of rp is helping escort mob X to his home and having partys at reet retreat you might aswell just make us a nice video containing those elements that we can loop over and over again.

I doubt very much that by this action we will see more rp, events and the like, unless ofcourse your the one resposible for all those things aswell, which if it is the case may explain alot.

Another problem is how will people know about the "events" when you butched the community ? only a few people knows about the event calendar, and even fewer use it.
Removing our out of game communication and placing the resposebility on the fan sites is probably the worst choice you have ever made. 12.6 and 14.6 are all nothing compared to this.
I wont tell you that the streets will go empty yet again.. its just the vision I currently have.
Operation impending doom 2 seems to have started with patch 15.6.5
12.6 first contact, 14.6 second attempt, 16.6 Invasion of the gabber bots ?

Lets not forget a few other things.

The fansites spam you with ADS.

They SELL your email address that you have to submit to register to SPAMMERS which SPAM YOU WITH MORE ADS.

And in some cases like IGN and Stratics THEY SELL YOUR PHYSICAL ADDRESS to marketers so the marketers can SPAM YOU FURTHER with unwanted mail.

Meanwhile, Funcom still gets my monthly fee....and I get absolutely no community support for what I CAME TO RUBI-KA to do which is roleplay.

-HOW- are you going to stay close to your roleplay community when its not centrally located where you can get your hands on it? What can you possibly feed us? You've changed the ENTIRE game to favor PvP....and the story of the game has gone by the wayside. The one place we had to continue it on our own was the Roleplaying forum here and now your taking that away.

I'm here to tell you now that there are single storylines and character developments in your RP forum that are worth the weight of bandwidth and time your entire Suggestions forum takes up.

I'm not going to IGN. I'm not going to Stratics, I'm not going to AO-Basher or anyone else. I don't want to be SPAMMED to put money in the pockets of whatever company administers these sites.

And guess what, as soon as I don't feel like I'm part of a community anymore. I won't just not be going to these fansites, I won't be playing your game anymore either.

I didn't buy this software an activate an account because I wanted to do the SAME THING I DID IN 4 OTHER GAMES NOW which is climb the "kill the monster" ladder until I run out of rungs. I bought this game to participate in a science fiction based massively multiplayer online ROLEPLAYING game. And guess what Cz...other than the Roleplaying forum....and some very determined efforts by a SMALL amount of players in your player base to develop it on their own THERE IS NO ROLEPLAYING CONTENT in your game. The Roleplaying forum is an absolute JOY because even if I've been in game all day surrounded by nothing but EQ-l33t d3wd refugee's....(of which there are far too many), I can at least come here and roleplay and interact in the roleplay forum...or at least see people develop their characters in story.

Now your going to take that away. And force me to eat spam should I wish to continue such pursuits.

Well, sorry. I say no to that proposal. I find it unnacceptable. If on January 22nd there is no roleplay forum here....then Funcom will no longer recieve my money. Because I'm not going to pay you for no roleplay in a roleplaying game...and then still have to endure SPAM to get at what little of it there is.

I'll go back to DAoC, I may hate the company that runs it, and the gimped balance of their PvP system...but at least they have two Roleplay focused servers.

You want to get close to the RP community? You want to feed us as much as possible? Give us our own server. Leave our forum alone. Whether you believe it or not, middle of this year when people are abandoning the ship like rats on fire for SWG....the roleplayers are going to be the ones still here. While all the l33t d3wds go off for 6 months to try out the new game...the roleplayers will be the ones here, the people that truly love and enjoy the game concept.

Gah I can't even express how frustrated I am right now. I expected more from Funcom...just like the other person in this thread did. I remember back before Beta....all the "Oh we'll never be like Verant" line comments.

Guess what....you are like Verant. But its worse, because your product has even less RP than EQ, and even more bugs.

    Sigh.

Kasimir, "POed"? (I should probably know this, but I'm tired, ok? )

And we do have care for the community. It's way too easy for somebody to say "you don't care" to anybody at any time.

/me goes to get some food (back later)

This is a long thread and I'm probably repeating what everyone else has said, but CZ, this is a BAD idea.

As it exists now, the forum is an extention of the game. We play, we post, we have communities in game and in the forums.

After a while here, you know who is reasonable and who to ignore, some write well and are total idiots in game, and vice versa.

To me really, cutting out the forums is like cutting out a piece of the game. Forums foster community, which I think in the long run helps you retain customers. After playing the game and building a forum identity, people are much less likely to bolt to the next game, but new players and disenfranchised old players without a place to call home will find it much easier to leave to go to the next game.

For funcom gutting the forums may be a short term gain, but a long term loss.

Bah, one more reply. Then food...

Lumin, I'd actually love to show up at Reet Retreat once. You know how often I've had the time to show up there? Once.

And we're not placing the responsibility of communication on the fan sites. Not at all. That is still on us, and we want to do more of it.

Uhm, Sid Scheer, I have been registered at all those sites for two years, and have yet to recieve any spam due to that.

We do have ads on the website to be able to provide the content/boards, you are right. Spamming with ads doesn't seem like a correct definition though. Almost all websites on the web have ads of some form.

IGN does not sell your email address or your mailing address however - why on Earth you thought that ???

It's saddening to see this happening, although I suppose it's not completely unexpected.

I will say that the following quote is what troubles me the most, Cz:

Those kind of unknowns are usually of a few specific types, which is why it troubles me. It signals to me that Funcom as a company is struggling - and that's not a happy thought. You should have received additional help long before this, and it apparently is not coming either.

I'd certainly like to see the Profession forums stay. I hate to say it, but I don't feel the Anarchy Online community is large enough to provide strong Profession forums that will concentrate a vast majority of players. The community will get diluted as less Profession-specific talk will be available. How are the Professionals going to be able to get our feedback (much less have a discussion with the majority of us) if official Profession forums for us to talk to them aren't available?

There are some great sites in the community, but not many that offer (or can offer) what the current official boards do.

Anyways, I'll end on a smiley face since I appreciate the work you do for us.

    Thumbs down

What a great self-fulfilling spiral this is.

First cut back on the "community team". (This part already happened).

A while later - oh no! Not enough staff to moderate the forums. Cut them back. It's for "players benefit". Of course! (This is the part about to happen)

Later... Ah, since there's not that many forums, looks like we don't need a "community team" anymore. (This will come later)

Later... Hmmm, well since we don't have a "community team", we have nobody to watch the forums. We're going to have to do away with them all. It's for "player's benefit". Of course! (This will come even later)

Also, this change will make it even easier to say "That is off-topic for the bulletin boards". We'll see a lot more "off topic" stuff after this change. You watch.

And the beauty of eliminating the bugs forum is that folks don't get to share experiences and determine the nature of bugs in detail. Instead, we will all be "lone wolfs", reporting them individually via email, not benefitting from shared knowledge. So when we individually get told "hmm no one else has reported that", it may not be true but we won't know it. Great "damage control" move here!

since you are dead set on doing this

is there any chance of letting some of the rules out of the sack?

i basically came to these forums when i wanted to browse and when looking for hard facts about the rules.

there never were official statements and what i know about the way ao works, i learned from some very insightful posts here.

people from the community who put up spread sheets, worked their weapons with a stop watch, who programmed bots and maps.

these things will be lost once the official central forums go down and i will miss them alot.

might as well say goodbye now since i rarely read the profession forums.

    cya around.

I hate commercials and pop ups

If Funcom wants us to use other boards, they should pay them enough to remove the ads..I am not gonna watch commercials for god knows what to access forums that should be here.

Capacitor, as I said, I can't move into that, but no, you're not entirely correct with that. I understand the reasoning though, which is why it is extra irritating not being able to explain 100%.

That said, considering that I was heading out to get food anyway, I'll just head home and log on from there. I'll be gone an hour or two then, going home and cooking dinner.

I know you care, but I think this is a lousy way to show it..and PO means p*ssed off.

Seriously..if you haven't got the staff..well hire a crew of ARKs to be mods..I spend more time on the boards then in game half the time myself, I'd be happy too..and I know a lot of great people that probably would too.

And we're not placing the responsibility of communication on the fan sites. Not at all. That is still on us, and we want to do more of it.
So..by getting rid of the largest single communications method viable to the largest number of viewers, how do you intend to communicate more? I'm confused. If there's things we're not seeing, please, share what you can..because whether you intend it or not, this looks like a headsman's axe to the AO community at large. (don't count email, because that ends up being person-to-person and loses the community feel of public posting)

    Hello Sid Scheer,

rest assured that Stratics does never hand out any information about it's visitors. The ads on Stratics are needed to (partly) pay for the hosting of the network. All networks use this way to get some money to pay for the servers and bandwidth used by the sites they host. You will never get any spam from us when signing up with our forums or anywhere else on the Stratics network. We do not and have never given out or sold any visitor information to anyone. I don't know where you base your accusations of, but you are 100% wrong with your assumptions.

Regarding the article, we at Stratics are glad that this move went through since an active forum is halfway through being a good site. Don't understand us as hostile vultures who want your money or something, instead our aim is to be ressources for the community where you can find what you are looking for. The content such as guides, exclusive videos or screenshots are part of what you can find at a major site. Lack of forum activity on all the big sites for Anarchy Online however, is reason to be concerned for all of us. Having the Funcom forums soak up all the community is not helpful as that means less exposure of the game to the outside. The more "fansites" a game has (and can satisfy with news and content), the better advertisement it is for the game itself. In closure I can say that this move by Funcom is welcome by Stratics and will hopefully help to give the community a more interesting environment to post in and get to know each other.

The Stratics forums are moderated, thus we will not allow the amount of flamewars and *****ing that has occured on these forums here during the last 2 years. If you are interested to become a moderator on our forums in the future, feel free to contact our forum coordinator Mkoll at mkoll@stratics.com
