Thread: 13.6 and AO Mission Display?

  1. #21
    I can't believe it!
I've been playing since release and only when I discovered this thread did I know about the existence of AOMD. And now it may not work anymore?!

Well, I'm gonna mission for all I'm worth until the next patch. Already, I've gotten more valuable loot in two days then in all the months before that .

Thanks for bringing it to my attention and MORB and others: good luck in modifying the code!

Muzzleflash (the author of AOMD) is using WinPcap to drive AOMD. If I remember correctly, WinPcap is a packet capturing API for Windows similar to UNIX libpcap. The reason WinPcap exists is because the native Windows API does not provide support for packet capturing. This is where the Ethernet only business comes in because WinPcap only supports packet drivers for Ethernet cards.

I'm no expert on this matter by any means. However, I have seen a similar utility avilable for Diablo II (long in the past now) that achieved a similar goal: sniffing out the packets sent from the Diablo server to the client to gain extra information. I wasn't aware that this used any packet capturing APIs. Therefore, it is possible that AOMD could be altered to circumnavigate WinPcap thus giving support for the modem users.

If I have time, I'll also have a look and see if I can gain any extra information on this.

    only work in windowed?

Will AOMD only work if you're running AO in windowed mode?

I have compiled a version of AOMD that works on test. The mission description data format haven't really changed, but only the signature value that AOMD use to find out the mission data...

The big question mark being still the missions with several rewards. I didn't get any mission with several items, but now maybe you never get two rewards when you're only level 2... Although I suspect that only escort missions were giving two rewards.

As for the packet format, I think the current one already have room for more reward object informations, there's a fairly big place that seems to be always full of zero in the mission datas currently...

And in fact, even on live you get a small tooltip saying "free" when you put your mouse just on the right of the reward item, or just under it, so there's some stuff in the way of multi reward item support already there since some time it seems...

    13.66 Update

    1) Escort missions are out.
    2) The 9 rewards thing was a bug, like I suspected. Apparently permitted, and maybe a future problem, but not an immediate problem.

    ...
And another update -- I just spent a long time manually mission booth camping, and never again saw another 2-reward mission. They seem to have gone back to the old format. Yee haw.

Any chance of posting a URL to the recompiled AOMD, or at least sending it to me on this BBoard via private mail?

I'll send you it with private message, because I want to ask muzzleflash if he doesn't mind that I put a new version on my homepage before doing so...

Edit: I forgot to mail myself the AOMD.exe at work yesterday, so I can't send it to you until tonight :)

Yes. It runs in a floating window that floats "over" your AO window. If I didn't have a two-monitor system, I'd find that a trifle annoying. At the very least, I wish it had a minimize button. But most people are launching it when they get to the mission terminal, and quitting it when they leave the mission terminal.

Agree! If they were going to waste their time on something that will improve 10% of players game play (ala japanese chat display), why not implement something that could benefit all of their player base? Perhaps, because money from new japanese player > money from monthly suscription?

I just wanted to throw my 2 credits in here and say something which I had said in another thread regarding AOMD:

As you all know AOMD (as it Muzzleflash's lastest version stands) does not work with 13.6, but it must be said that this is not our responsibility. When we do updates to the mission system we will not take the functionality of 3rd party tools into consideration. So, unless Muzzleflash does some tweaks to AOMD (or someone picks up his source code and works on it), or we change the mission system for reasons unrelated to AOMD that results in AOMD working again, AOMD will remain "not working" with 13.6.

We have no plans right now of making it an official addition to AO. I know it's a big help out to may of you, so if anything, I can only suggest some of the programmers out there work on it (as it seems MORB is doing). Props to you.

    so... in other words:

AOMD is concidered OK to use, if someone simply updates ti's code to suit 13.6?

btw: www.muzzleflash.da.ru is it's adress for those not knowing it yet.
The author says there that he has left AO, but he has been kind ebnough to leave the source-code available.
All that is needed, is someone with programmingskills and the time. (not gonna be me, since I lack in the first)

    You're da man, Morb, really!!!
Muzzleflash says explicitly on his page, that it's ok to work with it, cuz he quit AO. I tried to mail him once, but his email-addy didn't work. Me (and prolly 100s of other ppl) would be very happy if you put it somewhere for download.
I can also upload it somewhere for download if multiple sites are needed - of course giving full credit to you and Muzzleflash.
In any case.. if you don't want to upload it yet - maybe you can also send it to me by pm? *Bows*

So this mean Funcom dont mind us players making utilities that sniff the packets to gather info not normally available in the client? I wonder how much info the server sends to the client. Hp/Level/nano of all mobs/players in the vicinity? Maybe someone want to make a AO version of ShowEQ?

Seriously tho I would rather see that you encrypt the packages and rather improve the mission terminal windows.

  18. #38
I don't see him saying it's ok to display stuff not normally available to the client. AOMD is only a different display of the mission rewards which are already available though the client.

Thats quite a bit different then ShowEQ for example.

I like it, infact I need it. The old way of getting missions wrecked my wrist if I did it too long.

  19. #39
It's already done, and has been available for download for several days, as I have posted in another thread ( http://a.chavasse.free.fr )

I'll remove the "BETA" stuff from the archive name and program tomorrow if it works on live after the patch. Otherwise, I'll have some more fun with packet logs and a hex editor :)

I'm currently looking at the possibility to iconify the GUI, and have it maximize itself automatically whenever you generate missions on the mission terminal.

I keep asking this question in various places, no one ever answers it.

The "Watch" function of AOMD has never worked for me. Does it work for anyone else?
