Thread: The Perfect Weapon

    Lightbulb The Perfect Weapon

This is a repost from six months ago, when I left due to the poor state of tradeskillz. I've noticed that though many things have been changed for the better, this item is still an issue...

There has been a lot of talk lately about possible ways to improve the trade skills.
Many people have brought up the fact that Funcom claimed that players would not have to kill MOBs or NPCs to be a functioning member of the AO community. I can remember something on the box about being able to role-play as an ordinary citizen of Rubi-Ka. Well, as it stands, this is hardly the case. Everyone who plays has to kill in order to advance at reasonable pace. The game is heavily biased in favor of players who would prefer to kill. Any true pursuit of trade skills is a side note to the “main event”. This boxed in approach to role-playing is not only suffocating, but contrary to what was promised by Funcom as well. The concept of role-play needs to be broadened. Why have even 100 different professions, if ultimately we are all really just assassins. I want to be creative, constructive, connected. I want to fabricate the perfect weapon, and stamp my name on it, so everyone will know! I want to make armor that an enforcer would KILL for. I don’t want to grab a recipe book, and drudge around looking for parts to make a weapon that no one wants. The approach that Funcom has taken toward trade skills doesn’t do them justice. There is great potential, but they haven’t scraped the surface. Funcom has the ability and the framework to do something extraordinary with AO.

If we consider the way that implants are made, we can see the framework that I’m speaking of. There are a number of implants, and each has three (3) slots (faded, bright, and shinning). There are several different clusters that can go in each of these slots dependant upon the implant itself, and all of this is governed by a simple QL system. The resulting implant is modified by what is put into it. There is no “Recipe Book” for a “Shinning E=mc^ Head Implant”. Players are required to use their creativity and work through the problem to make something that is useful out of raw materials. In the same way, the processes for weapon, armor, robot, and clothing manufacture could be modified to allow for the same amount, if not even more freedom. Imagine being able to obtain a QL 100 rifle construction kit. It has 5 slots, because it’s a “big old riffle”, (the pistol kits only have 3 slots, shotguns have 4). You have several different parts that can be put into the slots, and each part modifies the attributes of the riffle in some way. Maybe you want longer range, so you put on a “high accuracy barrel” in the barrel slot. Perhaps, you want more power, so you slap in a “nano regulated high pressure compression chamber”. Each of the components have to be a certain QL, just like implants and clusters, but the finished product would be something more than any other RP game has ever provided. Players would no longer simply interact with the simulation; they would have the ability to actively change their world through the act of creation.

This level of interaction could be incorporated into all kinds of trade skill processes, and it would revolutionize the player’s experience. I envision an entire trade community dedicated to improving on weapons and armor designs. Clothing guilds that feed the growing fashion community. Engineers that actually engineer devices, instead of simply manufacturing them, according to specifications.

I am not a programmer, at least not in RL. However, I wouldn’t think that these ideas should be so hard to implement. Like I said, the frame is already there. Funcom just has to put some flesh on the bones. More “good” content is always desirable, and this level of interaction would make a lot of people very happy.

BTW, why not put me on payroll, I’d love to make real money for ideas like this..."

    Cool Great idea!

I´ve just read the original thread and I totally agree with you that somthing has to be done about the ability to manufacture weapons. Albeit for a different reason...

I´m frankly quite sick of having only a handful, if that, guns to choose from, if I want to do a decent amount of damage. Why are there 100s of guns and other weapons in the game, but only maybe 10% are in any way useful. I realise it is a lot of fun to maximise every little detail on your char, (why use ql 90 imps If i can do 95 ... ) but It´s boring as hell to see another soldier with a div-9, or another fixer/doc/trader with a manex (FC don´t nerf them cause I said this please!!!), and the list goes on.
What I would love is to be able to find a great gun in the "Remains of <insert mob here>" by total chance.
At the moment if you want top equipment you have to have some higher players blizz it for you, or get about 20 highs to kill the totally overcamped Ubermob xy, which may drop what you need. (The last argument is less relevant on DNW, where I play, due the lower number of players, but hey...) It is simply impossible to find good stuff for yourself. I don´t consider blizzing 100% missions by the skin of your teeth a viable way to get equipment. Yes, I know it works, but seriously, does anyone believe Funcom wanted this to be the way to do it, originally?

Yeshua, to show that my ramblings have anything at all to do with your thread, here´s what I would like to see even more:

I find a ql 120 "Perfect composite alloy barrel with bells on it" in a mission on a random mob. I think to myself: " I wonder what my friend Gadgetman, the engineer makes of this..." After showing the item to him, he exclaims: "Wow great, I´ve got some rapid firing mechanisms, that I had no idea what to use for, but that might work..."
After finishing the mission, he tells me he needs some more things to make a pretty good assault rifle for me, and I´d have a choice of wheter I´d like +10 on my assault rifle skill or +5 on my Full Auto skill. Finally, he hands me this great gun that deals a little less damage than the officially approved best gun for my profession (see above for details). I would use it! It´s mine! The coolest thing would be the name of this gun. Depending on the parts used it would be, let´s say a "High-velocity assault rifle OT 541", but because it was made by my friend Gadgetman, it would be :"Gadgetman´s High-velocity assault rifle OT 541"
A maker´s mark like this would add so much flavour to the game! Imagine a skilled craftsman, being renowned for his asault rifles.. (suggestion for profession specialisation in shadowlands!)
"Hey you´re using a gadgetman? Cool!" I would love to see some in-game chat like that!

I play on DNW, so we may never meet Yeshua, but damn, I hope FC will implement these things or something similar!

    Let´s just pray!

    Precisely what I'm getting at

If implemented properly, this would be so Phat!

And it applies to all tradeskillz which employ creation of items...clothes included...

Though I think I would focus on weapons manufacture first, because I think that's what most people would be thirsty for.

Anyway, I hope FC doesn't miss this opportunity either. I heard that Star Wars Galaxies is going to have a sytem similar to what I'm suggesting, but still very much mired in the recipe process. It would be great if FC could tout this ability to create freely as a feature not provided by any other mmorpg... Might work in their favor as a way to get people to stay, and to attract new players...

Anyway, that's exactly what I meant by such a change imporving the social aspects of game play, by allowing people to create their own signature line of items, the game becomes exponentially more personal, and involved...

    Thanks for the post...

    Sorry guy's but...

..havent you heard? Its now called an "illegal exploit" to lvl by using tradeskills.

Thats right. Now, according to funcom...lvling by any other means other than killing a bazzillion mobs is now illegal and will get your account banned.

    Dont believe me?

    Cool idea.

The ability to coble together random parts of guns and see what you come up with is neat.

There could still be published recipies for standard weapons, but for the more creative people, why not be able to play with the parts and see what you can make?

    Unhappy Hmmm

I think it's interesting that 192 people have read this thread, but only 3 or 4 have anything to contribute.

It makes me wonder if people realize just how big this could be for AO.

Let's see, to make it plain...

If you're an assasin, looking for an edge, here it is. Weapons and Armor that only a select few can possibly have. Imagine being only one of a few wielding a special riffle that does maybe 100 points more damage above and beyond that of the best riffle for your lvl, or wearing armor with a little more projectile AC than what any other enforcer at your lvl can wear. This is what I'm getting at.

And of course, if you're a tradesman, the benefits seem obvious...

I don't know, sounds like a worth while idea to me. I'm amazed that so few people seem to care, or have anything to contribute...

Are we all satisfied with the current limitations of game play?

Believe it or not, the AO staff does review these boards, and they do judge what the community wants at least partially by what the community seems to support here. So, if you want to see a change like this implemented it's best to at least bump the thread to let them know that this is an idea you'd like to see in-game.

BTW, be sure to come to the Tradeskillerz Convention. Here's a thread all about it:

    I've talked it over

It seems some people feel that this would be a difficult idea to implement.

I dunno. Though I do program a little, I am by no means a programmer. It doesn't seem that it should be that much more difficult that the way implants have been implemented.

You have a shell for a gun

You cannot use it until all slots are full, 3-7 depending on the type of shell, rifle, pistol, hyand cannon.

You mix and match the parts you want in it, changing the stats and reqs as you go, getting xp for each part you insert.

When you've finished inserting all the parts the finished product would automatically assume the name "<yourname> Long-Range Rifle" or something like that. No naming required. So for me, it would be a "Moesis Long-Range Riffle" or something along those l ines.

Seems pretty simple to me, I mean all you'd have to do is remove the recipe requirements.

the only problem is that it would be a lot of work for the programmers to make all the possible variants and the steps to creation actual items in the game. As you said before they already have the tools to do this, just need to spend the time to create it.

Some time go look at all the implant items that exist.

Then tell me it wouldn't be a time-consuming job to create this system, even after deciding exactly how it would work.

Data entry SUCKS. I wouldn't want to have to enter in all the possible combinations; would you?

i'd gladly do it, even for free

I'd do it for free in a heart beat!

But I'm paying Funcom to do it for me...

THis would be a GREAT idea, the problem is that FC, doesn't seem to do ANYTHING in the patches except technical erros..... the black door fix . Ql problems etc..... when alst have they made a patch that actually did something for the player and not the server or program!!!!!!!!!

    sorry for the rant

Link won't work for me, but if it's true, they continue to bring down the concept of AO to a grind and I think a lot of people will leave on April 17th. What's happening that day? Verant, the famous publishers of EverCamp (tm), will bring you L3wt W4rZ Galaxies ... er, I mean, Star Wars Galaxies. At least, that's the official release date.

Maybe its a cover-up, because maybe FC realised they made a stupid mistake by stating that and wanted players to quickly foget about it...maybe...

Regardless, I believe 1st Yeshua's idea about tradeskills, even if it only covers weaponry so far - is a great idea. It should make tradeskills that bit more interesting to what they are now.

(I can only hope that FC did not state that lvl'ing by any means than by kiling is cheating. If you did FC, sort it out.)

Well, along the line of levelling by not killing. It's funny to see that completing a static quest will give you money and XP, the amount of XP you actually get is a maximum of 10% you need to level. I guess this already qualifies as an annoyance. I agree - this might be exploitable by getting lowbies complete Dodga / Alvin part 3 through massive help and thus gaining huge amounts of XP at once, but there's a lot of low-level quests like Bobic Hood - my three alts that did it at the intended levels (7-10) all got only around 10-20% of the promised XP, and that's not like it should be.
