    Too much

You know, theres been something nagging at me in the back of my brain now for a while (its a little slow, but after all I am and enforcer).

This is a science fiction setting. Thats why I play this. I'm a nerd at heart I like Star trek and B5 and stuff. Never was a big fan of hob goblins and trolls and orks and wizards and stuff. But...

I'm coming to the decision that theres just too much magic in this game for me.

I don't want magic in a scifi game. I want Scifi.

Don't get me wrong this is a brilliant game but i just missed the mark.

I came to MMorpg s from Delta Force Landwarrior where you got no hit points an no buffs. Just a gun and a load of ammo.

I love to bits the skill idea and character improvement plan in AO.

And this is an Enforcer talking may be if the IP thing was turned on its head...

Bucket loads of IP early in the game say up to lvl 70ish so you could truely try anything you like. and then make it more specialised later on.

    Kinda like life is.

Im sorry but I would rate this flame with an 1. Aggression is to high, grammar and cursing isnt to well planned... Maybe he has an point somewhere in there but I dont even want to find it. - Centurion3

I agree with ya kissy.... There is to much high fantasy...:/

Im a sci/fi lover as well... Love Star Trek And B5..

So please, please, please FC make this more of a sci/fi game. We dont need goblins, trolls or magic - we chosed AO because it is first and foremost a sci/fi game.

    p.s. Enterprise roxxor.

    I gotta agree with you.

I mean look at this: the highest dungeon in this game is located in Camelot, where you run into skeletons....

And some of the most coveted items in this game come from a dragon..... an incredible amount of thought must have gone into Camelot and Tarasque.

Imagine a world 30,000 years in the future where death is not permanent and matter is almost infinitely manipulable via microscopic machines.

It is difficult to predict what characteristics a particular culture will find aesthetically pleasing at a given point in time.

The "high fantasy" aspects of AO could be reflections of the aesthetic sensibilities of the culture. For instance, in a world where matter is easily manipulated, killing is a way of life, and death not permanent, why would all weapons look like "guns?" Guns look like guns today because they have to. If they could look like cool swords or a chocolate cake, some would.

In such a world, why wouldn't the aesthetic sensibilities of the nanotech scientists be reflected in their creations (monsters)? See Eldon Tyrell's quarters in "Blade Runner" for a reference.

This is why the argument that "such and such a profession shouldn't be good at such and such" is bogus. Applying a modern day definition of "doctor" or "trader" to a culture 30,000 years in the future is counterproductive. The game uses those names to avoid other types of confusion. A trader, for instance, is really closest to a "vampire" in a 21st century understanding, a creature that sucks the life out of others to become stronger, but to name the profession as such would have created several types of other problems.

hmpf, i never really thought a trader beein some sort of vampire ....

but if it's funcom's vision (eehehehe or probably the share-holder vision ehehehe), then so be it ....

    nice to know ,)

and pfffffff i *definitively* don't see why vampires should be better than engineers with tradeskillzzz and stuff ... ha ... pffff ... ,)
    tradeskillz ?

Why in the world would anyone suggest swg as a way to get away from magic in a sci-fi setting? The force is as obvious an analogy to magic as it gets.

An excellent post and point of view.

Maybe I'm just not ready for 30,000 years of evolution. 2 or 3 thousand would do me.

SWG has the Force.... looks like magic to me

Ok so now i'm sittin here trying to think of a future scifi film / series / thing with no real formof wizardry.

Alien (which would suit an AO clone down to the ground)

Babylon 5 aside from Lorien there was very little magic in there. And he was really only in the last series.

Maybe Dune but the bengeserit were a bit too Hoodoo for me.

If FC ever make Alien around the same sorta engine as AO I'd play it.

Damn, I never thought I'd see this day where Kissy would leave. It's been great, ever since the early Airhawk days, and I hope you have a great time in your future.

One reason you get magic type stuff in these settings is just variety. People look at different games, and if the game doesn't have every sort of char type another game does, then it's criticisized for being too restricting or not allowing enough options.

Not only is there too much fantasy.... there's too much old-fashioned religion, or at least it's heading in that direction.

While you and I never directly interacted Kissy, I've seen you a lot on the forums. It's a shame to see you go, but email me at krystanova@yahoo.com if you're interested in getting something together for SWG.
