    Question Soldiers

Pardon me if i get this wrong, being only a lowly LVL19, I think the use of all professions is totally upside down. let see if I have got this right

Adventures run into the wilderness looking for adventures, hence the name.

Agent is the one who likes sneaking around, silently sneaking up behind you, and saying BOO!

Beaurocrat is the sweet-talking man with a knife in the hand behind his back, just in case, of course.

Doctor is the one you run too when you are dying of something or other.

Enforcer the good all round thug usually found on night club entrances or in the local police force

Engineer is the guy you get to build something for you, again the name gives it away.

Fixer well now here we have the good old scrounger, need some nylons nod nod, wink wink, say no more.

Martial artist, specialist in hand to hand combat and playing with sharp things.

Meta Physicist is nothing more than a wizard brought into the 20 something century.

Nano technicians are the ones that produce all those nice nano thingies bit like alchemists I suppose.

Soldier point him in the right direction and say "If it moves kill it".

Traders buy and sell things, simple, more money, more power.

So thats that, nice and simple is it not, so how come a guy who deals in money all day, can take out a hardened soldier without breaking sweat. Surely the point is, the trader hires soldiers to kick butt for him, the more money he has the better soldiers he can afford. To do this he has to deal with everybody who has to hire everybody else to do what they need. It is supposed to be a community of different people with different skills and professions, all I can see is the one with the biggest gun winning, in which case you are all soldiers wearing a funny suit.

You could always try thinking of a Soldier in RL terms....

"Bullet Blockers" so that Generals in the back dont get killed.

Then again if you thought of pvp in RL terms...

I guess Crat would be a politician and therefore unkillable, cept by a lone Agent with a high powered rifle.

Woooooshhhh JFK reference flys by ....was in poor taste anyway.

Actually with the servers down I am just bouncing from board to board bored.

I think that maybe FC should post thier intentions on who is gonna be whos "rock".

I am sure that the soldiers will be someones "rock", just not sure who.

    Cheers,

back to my original post, the point is that somebody will always be top dog, I just happen to think the whole mentality of having traders as top dog, just a little on the wrong side. If it comes down to who has the biggest, baddest gun then everybody is a soldier.

    Smile In an ideal world...

    you would be right.

Unfortunately the AO world/trade system is not strong enough to support advanacement from anything other than combat (something that has had people banging their heads against a brick wall since the beginning [1]).

So if killing MOBs is the only way to get levels (using a skill doesn't increase the skill unfortunately [1]) then you need to be able to do one of the following:

    1) Fight Solo
    2) Fight in a team

    2) is not always achievable so we need to provide for the ability to solo which means... exactly what you have noticed. Everyone gets the ability to kill.

Most weapons are usable by all professions if they can spare the IP (which is hard until 150+) so most high levels players will have a weapon of some kind to help deal out damage.

So, the core focus on each class then becomes _how_ they kill and what support abilities they provide or have access to.

Docs are the best healers and also get various Debuffs and Damage over Times, MAs are fast and nimble, Enforcers are brute strength and damage soaking, Fixers are masters of grid technology, NTs get Area of Effect nukes and Calms, Crats get AoE calms for crowd control and support bots, Engineers get Droids (Slayerdroids are awesome) and so on.

Originally I was very strongly against allowing all profs to fight on almost equal footing but the more I play the more I agree with it. They are not there yet by a long way but they _are_ gettign there. (whether it is fast enough or not to survive past SWG is another question)

    Regards,
    Rahm

[1] - The problem with allowing people to grow their skills with use is the potential for expolits/training. Not insurmountable I am sure but there nonetheless.

Okay you explained what everybody got except soldiers, or, are they as I suspect from reading the posts on this forum a forgotten profession who Funcom wish to see the back of.

I think that FC's "Paper, Rock, Scissors" idea is so that there will not be a "Top Dog".

Things take time in MMORPG, the game is never finished and who knows who will move up in power and how. I am sure the game developers have a plan but that is probably subject to change.

Atm, Traders may own Soliders, in the future they may or may not own them.

Plus who knows how mass pvp is gonna effect things.

    soldiers...

"Okay you explained what everybody got except soldiers..."

Hardly everyone, I didnt mention Metas, Adventurers, Agents and probably some others.

Soldiers get lots of weapon specials that allow them to do great damage in a short period of time and Nanos that reflect damage away from themselves and back onto the MOB. If you read the boards long enough you will see a LOT of people think that their profession is the worst and that Profesion Y is "Uber" because Y gets this and Z gets that.

    <shrug>

I am not saying that Soldiers don't need more attention but then so does everyone else.

    Regards,
    Rahm
