Thread: So sorry to say it...

Unhappy So sorry to say it...

I hate to say it, but I'm quitting AO hardly before I get started.

Don't take this the wrong way. I love AO. I'm only level 6 or so, but I'm really enjoying it. I was attempting to assemble a full suit of cyber armor and get some better weapons and such. Ya know, typical newbie stuff. I'd even decided I was going to save as much as possible so I could get one of those kick-ass flying vehicles(a steal at only 4 million creds!).

So if I enjoy the game so much, why am I quitting? Because it's too much damned work to figure out how to keep the game running on my machine. Almost every time I want to play I have to spend hours(at least two) getting the program up and running. Once I do, it runs fine for as long as I play(up to 6 or so hours. I like to screw around with character creation. Only just now decided tha fixers seem coolest). On the other hand, no game, no matter how good, is worth dicking with for two hours everytime I want to play. Maybe someday FunCom will fix this, and I really hope they do. When that day comes, I'llbe back. Until then, good luck, godspeed, and don't run out of ammo.

ghst, if you're so anti-funcom, why are you still trolling the forums? if you think AO sucks so much ass, then move on and let us be. SOME of us actually enjoy the ass-sucking game from the POS company :P

    Question Eh

Tifins, "Maybe someday FunCom will fix this". Fix what? I dont spend 2 hours "dicking around" to get the game running and neither does anyone I know.. Has it occured to you that the problem might be with your computer or installation?

Why dont you give us some more information and maybe someone will help you, instead of blaming Funcom.

    What exactly is the problem?

    Tifins,

You might want to try posting this in one of the bug forums. This isn't the most appropriate forum for technical problems.

But, usually once AO is installed and patched you shouldn't really be having problems with it launching.

I've played UO, EQ, AC, AO, EQ, DAoC . . . and SINCE Funcom has fixed the stability portion of AO . . .

AO wins the 'FUN FACTOR' contest of ANY of the other games--hands down. That is what counts--end of discussion!

Or try the next patch forum.... through all the flaming in one post we managed to fix someone's tech problems... try what is suggested there

That has to be the strangest post I've ever seen. What the heck would make your computer decide to run a program one day and then change automatically overnight while you sleep to not run it the next time.

What are you dicking with for two hours to get the game to run? If you gave some clues as to what you are playing with maybe some of the people in this forum could assist you.

I hate to see someone who obviously likes playing it as much as you have to give it up. It is a fun game as you state. I'm sure you'd be proud once you get your cyber helmet and plane. The whole game changes once you get your Yalmaha and join the Mile High Club.

So why not help yourself out (or if you're dead set on giving it up, maybe some others who have the same issues as you) and give us some spec's on your system and what steps you take to get things going.

    Question Well, what the hell.

Thanks to that last post for realizing what I was getting at(i.e. "What the heck would make your computer decide to run a program one day and then change automatically overnight while you sleep to not run it the next time."). In anycase, some of you asked that I post system specs and the like, so here I go.

    P2 450mhz
    128 megs RAM
    Direct X 8.0
CD-ROM drive is 8x or 12x(not entierly sure)
    Maxi Gamer"Cougar" video card

The sound card is built fright into the motherboard(I can hear the mega-gamers out there cringing already). And I hate to dick around with the innards of this thing. Software can be played with, not hardware(as a generally ignored rule of thumb).

In anycase, when I started having problems with the game I devoloped this secuence:

Uninstall game, delete FunCom folder. Reboot. Reinstall. Reboot. Patch to version 3.12. Reboot. Run 3.12, patcher starts.

At first, that worked fine. It was a bit of a pain in the ass, but I'm patient, and not too bright, so that was okay. But after I did that twice, it got all out of whack. It contuinually telle me that files are corrupted and then downloads anarchy.exe and the checksum files (checksum.tar.gz and something similar if I remember correctly). If I read the error logs they tell me that all my checksums are failing, and that some of my files simply aren't there(which they may or may not be). Tech help was fairly helpful at first, but it has become consistantly slower to respond to my inqueries. I've pretty much given up, as you noticed. I'd love to play (ghst, you jackass, I like running missions. And DaoC can lick my enormous throbbing hampster. If you're gonna be a troll, do it in a fantasy setting ya freak.)(hope that doesn't get this moderated or anything...) but if the game won't run, well... what am I paying for? Thanks for taking an interest all. Kudos to anyone who can actually help.

Ok. As The Ladiz man, and I just have to say, that computer thux. I would recomment u get some more ram, Yeah. That isn't enough ram to download pictures of Ally Macbeal, and She's Small. I suggest u look at my pornomatic chart of ram.

256MB - 40$ - Will let u look at those fine hunnys in AO for about 4 hours, before the memory leeks crash windos virtual memory.

512MB - 80$ - Will let u pimp for about 8 hours, and then all those textures of female behinds will clog ur computers memory and crash AO.

Now lets take a look at that skank tastic video card of urs there. I think that would have been a competitor in 3dStudio max a little while ago, Like 1998!!! That's like going to bed with Britney Spears when she's 90 years old, and believe me, those old bags can't put out like new ones. Now lets look at ur choices for video cards, because of course, video cards make movement smoother in AO. The CPU and Video card go hand in hand, so here is ur options.

1.2GHZ, Geforce3 - Now, this is Fantastic. I will call this the Denzel Washington setup, because it is the best.

900Mhz, Geforce2 - Now this is about the average wang of the computer world. Any lower and it would be a David Hazzelhof, and that guy sux.

About ur Cdrom. Personally, I use my Hard Drive to store the AO information in; That even loads slowly. My harddrive is a reputable 20GB hard drive, which is kind of small. My computer is a laptop btw. I suggest u get like a 60 GB HD because any smaller, and those Pamela videos get chunky, not to mention Womping. Remember that RPMs doesn't equate to speed.

If u have more questions about this computing stuff, send an e-mail to odielag@hotmail.com. Or send a tell to that nice virgin Fool, Odieengineer.

And remember everyone, When u get F***** by funnycom, just remember that they're humans that don't listen to their customers; and that most people that play are nice. Take care

I'm impressed. You actualy got that setup to run the game?

But seriously, your CPU is too slow, you don't have enough RAM and your graphics card sucks. If you don't want to upgrade your computer, your only option is to set all the video options to minimum, 640x480x16, minimum textures, minimum view distance etc. That might work, if you're lucky.

But I would suggest upgrading, and not to anything proprietary like Dell, HP, Gateway etc. Those are for suckers. You can't upgrade them for crap. For example: HP's boxes will only accept HP motherboards, anything else won't fit.

You could probably get everything you need for $450-$600 depending on motherboard, ram type (check the motherboard's manual before you buy), video card, and cpu. I suggest Athlon for CPU. You get more speed from the same Mhz, and they're cheaper to boot.

    Upgrade or die.

Yeah I think the concensus in here is that you reallllllllyyyy need to give ur pc a little love. If ur not happy with buying the bits and doing it urself then let us know where in the world you are.

I know some really good peeps in my area who can get what you need and install it - good advice, good prices and youll have a system that can run new games.

Im sure most of the players in here can tell you the same about their home town. No need to be overly specific if you dont want to - Im just thinking of way to get a fellow gamer up an runnin.

Ok, your computer is not a very new one, but it would still be able to run AO, not at max speed or anything but it should work.
You also said that when you get it to run, it keeps running, so its not really a Hardware problem, now is it?

Now when you mentioned that when you start the game, that your checksums failed, saying files are missing, i would suspect you have a virus on your hand, how else would those files dissapear, or get corrupted or whatever?

Your problem is not the hardware, but the software, i would suggest doing a virusscan

Thank you clochard. As for everyone else, next time I happen to have any money I'll think about coming here to find ways to blow it. I'm a poor college student, I don't have $50 usually, much less $400 to $600(and don't even say anything about parents).

Anyway, you may not know it, but running anarchy eliminates files. That's right. Read the err.log file. AO will move and kill and rename files as it sees fit(for what reason, I know not). All of them are in the AO file, but they don't all like to stay there. And once it's done something (renamed the anarchy online patcher to ap.exe for example) it always tries to do it again, even though the file has changed. This causes some lovely errors, as you might guess.

I'm just about to run a scan on the system, but I doubt anything will come up. This is a pretty fresh install of windows.

~Tifins(and all you uber-gamers, lemme 'lone. The system can run AO. It did it for days. I don't need no steenkeng upgrades.)

  18. #18

    i have an idea

Are you running a fast internet? if so go on the AO site and DOWNLOAD AO because maybe you just have a corrupt disk, it will take a while but could keep you in this great game and as you said you are patient.

  19. #19
Ouch tiffin I feel your pain . Your computer IS outdated but like clochard said you'll still be able to run AO and it might be a software and hardware combination of problems. On top of probable virus your operating system files might be corrupted as well here's what I would do.

    1) Scan for viruses remove if any.
    2) Backup all your school work
    3) Reformat your hard drive(s). I am assuming you know how to do it if you don't gimme a PM with your e-mail address and I'll let you know
    4) Reinstall your OS I would go with windows 98SE. You are a college student so you should not have any problems finding a copy around campus .
    5) Update all your drivers to the latest and the greatest
    6) Update your OS from windowsupdate.
    7) Don't update to Direct X 8.0 I think that on machine such as yours with the hardware drivers that you have there might be some incompatabilities.
    8) Let us know if it works
