Given most of the population is in the USA, I think a decent plan of action would be to start it at midnight Eastern time or whatever.
That means us europeans get to play that evening, rather than at 3am.

The ONLY reason why this downtime is scheduled at 8am EST is because they live in that timezone!
We could also relocate the servers to Europe if you like or even Australia. Australian gamers would love you for that! They have to live with high latency in nearly every online game.

well 12 hours maintenance means 3x 6 hours emergency patch, be happy it isnt patch...
