    Engine Comparison, Slowly getting less ambitious?

    The initial iteration of the new engine for AO

    Looked like this in 2008:

    Even still with things looking better in motion there's a differing quality between the 2008 video and the 2011 video. If that 2008 video was visually enhanced which it may have been, this has set the bar high in what a lot of old players will expect when coming back seems a mistake to me.

    Even still screenshots Means posted looked totally different than screenies posted this year.

    2008 video was a hacked up concept, not an actual running engine...

    Screenshots with a bunch of visual bugs relating to what the engine does to normal maps at distance will look worse than ones where this doesn't happen.

    Besides, I'll take actual, real implementation of new engine to get high resolution support and better performance as well as looks compared to current one than any dreams posted 5 years ago.

    Yeah of-coarse ill take anything right now, it's just fc was stupid to do that first video in the first place as its the video a lot of the old player base saw before leaving. Also the latest screenshot of tir look ok but the ground textures do look odd and theres also wierd edges on buildings.

    Eh, problems with the rendering in the new screenshots aside (and the lack of AA), I can't say the engine is looking any worse than say, the flora displacement demo. Like Masta said, the 2008 video was a mock-up and also from before they had switched gears to use the Dreamworld engine. As much as I think that video looks fantastic, it was never a reality.

    That said, this was plenty real, but that sky doesn't seem to have been kept based on recent screenshots and videos. We also haven't heard much about new heads/models in a long time, so I do worry we wont see those in 18.7.0.

    Actually they are getting less ambitious but that is the nature of software development. As release nears items that can't be finished are dropped for the release. So by release most times the final product is a realization of a much less ambitious set of specs than what was started with.

    I frankly have not liked any of the Dreamworld engine videos. Will wait to have it on my machine on my monitor with proper AA/AF set to make a judgement.

    even compared to post ogre-era videos, new screenshots seem to have less eyecandy.

    either the eyecandy has been removed, or screenshot taker chooses his place carefully to hide the effects, like water reflections.

    There were two or more engines involved so the first video shown was the old engine that was replaced.
