  1. #21
what i can only think of right now....perhaps not an all time top ten.

    comp top ten-ish:
*VGA Planets (first lan game i've played)
*Archon (apple ][e, wizard chess my a**, Harry Potter can go KY himself)
*Seth Able's LoRD (first BBS door game i've played)
*TekWars? (2nd BBS door game i've played)
    *AO
    *Civ series
*King's Bounty (precursor to Heroes of M&M, beats HM&M by a mile)
*Sim series (exception for SimAnts which i haven't played and SimEarth/Life which is way too drab)
*Marathon series (Mac FPS. one of best engine's i've ever seen)
*Descent series (best space FPS. WC can't compare)

    others up there
    *Star Control series
    *Elite
    *Rainbow 6: RS/CO/UO/BT
    *Syndicate
    *Cossacks
*Art of War/Art of War at Sea
    *Shadowgate

*Zork (first text-based offline game i've played)

    console/arcade games tops:
*Super Mario Bros. 3 - Famicom (nothing can top this)
*Metroid - Famicom (wicked atmosphere, great gameplay)
*Salamander - Famicom (Konami offshoot to Gradius, best shooter)
*Faxanadu - Famicom (first action-rpg ever, think castlevania with buying/selling gear + xp)
*Kingdom of Ys1&2 - PC Engine (almost able to kick FF's ass)
*SD Gundam: Capsule War - Famicom (best board war game, best SSI's Panzer General 2 by a mile, PG2 is definitely 2nd best )
*Beatmania IIDX series - Arcade/PS2 (best music + cool videos + simple&addictive gameplay)
*Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram - Arcade (best robotic sim fighting game)
    *Virtual Fighter 4 - Arcade/PS2 (best 3D fight sim)
*Guilty Gear XX - Arcade (best 2D fight sim)
*Marble Madness - Arcade (first+most addictive game played with a trackball)

err...that's a lot more than 10....=P i guess that's all for now. different genres definitely cannot be put together for an all-encompassing top ten.

Uh, should I do a top 10 by decade? hehe.

Here are my faves, in no particular order. I started out

-The Oregon Trail. First game I ever played on a TRS-80 with a tape drive. This was "pre-woody" days, too, btw.
    -Master of Orion2
    -Warcraft2
    -Dune
    -Ultima 3
    -Wizardry
    -Civilization 1,2,3
    -Xcom
    -Sim City
-Dr. J vs. Larry Bird, Apple ][+
    -AO (brownie points? )
    -UO
-Seven Cities of Gold, Apple ][+. Perhaps the grandaddy of empire games.
    -Empire
-Some addictive empire building game I played on a Plato terminal, can't remember the name.
-Some football game on the Mac whose graphics just showed X's and O's for players moving around. Go Bears!
    -Counterstrike
    -Doom
    -Unreal
    -Tecmo Bowl football

I could go on and on...

To hell with a top 10...gonna list 'em as I see 'em.

Ultima Underworld 2 (PC). Best CRPG ever made. challenging puzzles, excellent magic system, excellent story...everything that made DOS and bootdisks so damned cool is encapsulated in this game.

Wizball (C64). There has NEVER been a game made ANYWHERE at ANY time that was quite like this classic. Totally weird, totally fun and totally addictive.

Realms of the Haunting (PC). Best adventure/action game ever made. Creepy to high hell and altogether flawless. Shame no-one bought it. I have a paean to this game right here.

Halflife (PC). Bah, what more can I say that hasn't been said elsewhere a billion times? This game is the be all end all of FPS's.

System Shock (PC). Second best CRPG ever made. No-one bought it, but my god, it was such an immersive damn game. Went to work a tired man a lot of times after playing this.

Ultima 7: The Serpent Isle (PC). The puzzles were hard, and a few made no sense, but boy was this game fun. To quote Ale the Parrot: Walla Walla!

Microsurgeon (Intellivison). One of a kind game. It really was. Fun as hell though.

Pool of Radiance (C64) The old SSI Gold Box one, not the remake. I loved this game! Yarash the Sorceror! Kuto's Well! Tyranthraxus! They don't make 2d bitmapped games like this any more!

Secret of the Silver Blades (C64) I once half covered a lounge room floor mapping this game out on grid paper! It rocked and, like all the SSI Gold Box games, what it lacked in graphics, it made up for in great stories.

Another World (Amiga). Definitely was "something else" when it was released. Bizarre game, but it was damned cool.

Alone in the Dark (PC) C-c-c-creepy stuff! Crapped myself a few times playing this. Wicked game. Edward Carnby is da man!

Wolfenstein (PC) The original, once again...finding those secret walls was an obsession! An obsession, I tell you! Must find secret walls...superb game. Set the tone for things to come.

Honorable mentions go to: all Bioware games, especially BG2, the first Gabriel Knight game, Age of Empires 2, Doom, Heretic and Hexen series, Soldier of Fortune, X-Wing, TIE Fighter...for the C64: Defender of the Crown, Last Ninja, Outrun, Balderdash, Hillsfar, Curse of the Azure Bonds, R-Type...

    That's a wrap!

    Atari 2600: popeye!
    C64: stockcar, poleposition, last ninja

Started to list em first to lst, but futher below I came up with some real goodies, so count only the Top 5... then in no specific order.

    - Chrono Trigger (SNES)
No comments needed, just simply the best... ever... Launching my PSX and checking the new CGs that's being made every now and then. Finished 7 of 13 different endings.

    - Secret of Mana (SNES)
    How cute... too cute?!

    - Chrono Cross (PSX)
YEAH! Awsome, but can't beat the classics.

    - Phantasy Star II (Sega MegaDrive)
Played it, didn't understood a thing, but loved it... I was young

    - Final Fantasy 7 (PSX)
OMNI SLASH! Man I'm still shaky...

    - X-Com (uhm, 3rd one... Alliance?) (PC)
Man this was a great game! My first PC game that I bought. Day and night... day and night...

    - Zelda (NES)
The main theme still sounds through the speakers... BTW, anyone else bombed ever lil pixle of the game just to find all the secrets? I did

    - Tekken 3 (PSX)
Yay this is an awsome fighting game!

    - Dead or Alive 3 (XBox)
*shrugs* Man this is eyecandy, excellent gameplay! New fighting fave!

    - Simcity (SNES)
I think this took up major time in my youth days Addictive

    - Transformers (C64)
Boy, they made a game of my favorite cartoon... Oh my GOD!

    - Monkey Island 1 & 2 (Amiga500)
    Still laughing!

    - Street Rod 1 & 2 (Amiga500)
Tuning 60ish and 70ish cars... every boys dream

    - Winter Games (C64, Amiga500)
    Best wintergame ever!

    - Summer Games (C64, Amiga500)
    BMX baby!

    - Anarcy Online (PC)
Well, first MMORPG and I LOVE IT!

    - Unreal Tournament (PC)
Not the first FPS but probably closest to my heart.

    - Exitebike (NES)
Hehe, building yer own lvls and the run em... still rockin'!

    - Beneath a Steel Sky (Amiga500)
Never finished this game, but I loved it... if you don't count the darn dics swaps every frame My right arm still hurts.

    - Elite Last (Final?) Frontier (Amiga500)
Eww... is this game big or what? Looking forward to Elite 4 if it ever comes out.

Adding these to the list as well, I know it was supposed to be top 10, but I can't count out these games.

    - Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis (Amiga500)
Was it my first "point & Click" game? No, but still a classic

    - Dune II (Amiga500)
I love the movie from the 80s, the miniseries from 2000 and I love Dune II to Amiga

    - Metroid (NES)
Finished it over and over and over and over and over!

    - Super Mario Bros (NES)
Actually played it a year ago with 2 other friends, we finished it in 10 min... The final castle road is still in the head

    - Icewind Dale (PC)
I was more hooked to Icewind than I was with Baldurs... probably the reason that I played this with a friend... really good LAN RPG.

    - Spy vs Spy (C64, Amiga500, SNES)
Man, this was an awsome game... killin' yer bud with traps... You never knew what was in the next room.

    - Pirates (Amiga500) (was it called "Sid Meyer's Pirates")
arrrgh! The catch of the day!

    Done for now...

My list of many lost hours,

Doom - still have the occasional flash of tunnel vision.
Master of Orion - Even after so many years still play it with friends on a LAN.
Simcity - I probably should be given a Master degree in Urbanisation.
Civilisation - Never succeeded in winning on the Emporer level,
Championship Manager - Won the Championship league with Anderlecht in their 4th Season for the past 3 editions of CM.
Railway Tycoon - This games needs an update definetly. A shame no-one plays it on-line. The stock option is a GREAt feature.
System Shock - simple the best,
Baldurs Gate - out of words
Shogun Total War - GREAT game but a the the same time a BIG disillusion - cuz no Multiplayer mode full campaing.

    Games

You learn more about a person while playing an hour with him than living a life together.

    RPG:
    [Pen & Paper]
    - D&D

    - AD&D

    - Midgard (first commercial german RPG)

    - Runequest (and most of the clones)

    - and a few more ... (sigh, school time was great)

    [Computer]
    - Hack (I never made it down to the lowest level)

    - Dungeon Master (ahhh, I recall my Atari ... - the beginning)

    - Ultima Underworld I (great atmosphere, lots of innovations)

    - System Shock I (immersive, excellent story, balanced, ... great -> Basiel. Brought me at the edge of a heart attack, hehe, playing at 2 o'clock in the morning with head sets on, and that damn sneeky mutant approched in my back coming around the corner. I literally jumped out of my chair just hearing it's sound)

    - Diablo

    - Ice Wind Dale (clean, lean, straight forward)

    - Baldur's Gate II (time ...)

    Strategy:
    [Board Games]
    - SotN (Song of the Night, somebody) / Diplomacy

    - Source of the Nile (well, not really strategy, but a beautiful game)

    - Wooden Ships and Iron Men (ahhh, I would give a lot of money to someone who makes a 'good' computer version of this one)

    - Civilization (the board game!)

    - Zargo's Lords (a fortune to someone who owns one and still knows the rules)

    - ... the golden times of Avalon Hill Board Games - darn, I must be old

    [Computer]
    - Civi I (score 250+) / II and clones (Sid shamelessly mixed the board game with an Amiga game (forgot the name, grrr), but the result was perfect)

    - Colonization (really, better than most others)

    - Warcraft I

    - Master of Magic

    - Siedler I/II/III (IV - bah) and almost all other Bluebyte Games before(!) Siedler IV

    - HoMM II and IV (great one)

    Flight Simulators (well, sort of):
    - Wing Commander I/II and IV (can you imagine, I forgot Wing Commander)

    - Tie Fighter / X-Wing (hehe, the old WC versus George Lucas rivalry)

    - Privateer I / II (nice, but far from perfect)

Hmmm, resuming this list, I have played (too) much, haven't I. Well, people that play games, don't make too many RL problems, or so I hope.

    So long,

    Max(imilian)

Lot of brilliant game mentioned so far, but no1's said anything about Elite 2 : Frontier

I absolutly adored this game, sure was bugged to hell but was soooo much to do in that game, i got the top ship with all the top equiptment without using the money bug , then i sold it all for a small fast fighter so i could do military missions for the empire against the evil federation

was immersed in that game for months on my amiga.
Still have a copy of it sitting on my PC

    My favourite games:

Zynaps ZX-Spectrum 48k - My first game and played it for weeks and weeks. Back then when 48k memory was much.

Barts tale - good game, never finished it

Might & Magic - Still one of my favourite series. Still buying them when a new one arrives

Ultima underworld 1+2 -First real dungeon crawlers

Wasteland - Wish falout 1+2 were that good. Which doesnt mean i didnt like them but for me Wasteland was better.

Wizardry - same as might&magic series. Buying them when they come out

Civ - tried it for a long time. Isnt my kind of game but i played it for about 2 months. So something had to be good in it afterall.

Panzer General - I love wargames. This one has been the best for me

Baldur's Gate 1+2 - No need to explain how good they are.

Icewind Dale 1 - Great game, but much to short imo

Planescape torment - The best of all RPG's. But it seems i was one of the few who was loving it.

Capitalism 1+2 - strange to mention them, but both games are almost the longest played games ever on my comp. Still playing part 2 for a couple of hours in a week.

UO - my first online experience. Played it for 4 months and became bored with it.

EQ - my second online game. Left it because of all the fuzz in it

AO - my third one and i love it. Playing for 8 months now and it stays good.

  17. #37
Two stand out of the crowd for me:

Bardur's Gate 2 - one of the best computer rpgs made to date (have heard praise for PS:Torment but haven't played it yet).

System Shock 2 - the scariest game I've probably ever played, very creepy. Nice mix of role-playing and FPS.

  18. #38
