[RK1] IRRK Freelance: Interview with Commander Windguaerd of Mercury Dragons Clan

Interview with Commander Windguaerd of Mercury Dragons Clan
    October 26, 29483 - Sakkar Santoro [Atlantean]

IRRK Freelance - In early August I wrote a small Rubi-Ka Times article regarding the possible return of an old military clan. What I thought would be just a small piece of news, turned into something else when RKT Reporter Frank Stuart's piece titled "Will the clans face the threat of a civil war?" was published in early September.

Not only did it confirm the return of Mercury Dragons Clan, but it brought to light serious concerns among the clans about their return, and the possible return of the Council of Ares.

I had tried to get an interview with Commander Windguaerd, but none of my calls were answered, and my messages never got a reply.

Early afternoon yesterday, a Mr. Durham requested to meet me at ICC headquarters in the Andromeda territory, claiming to have information for me regarding the Dragons. I agreed to meet him at 5PM feeling that the chances of any unpleasant surprises would be dealt with by the ICC guards. I was there on time, but instead of meeting Mr. Durham, it was someone else who showed up. It was Commander Windguaerd himself, alone, without any escort.

He calmly assured me that all he wanted to do was grant me the interview I had requested. I was hesitant until he gave me a piece of paper. I immediately recognized the hand writing, it was from my old friend Noticiero. The note was short and to the point, "Trust him.".

He then proceeded to hand me a key and nodded towards the Serenity Islands entrance. "Your call", then he walked away and used the door. It took me just about 3 seconds to decide, I went after him.

The interview took place at the Cafe on Mercury Dragons island, one of the Serenity Islands which has recently been terraformed.

He'd had an outstanding military career and had been known to be a serious man. I asked him why he had retired 2 years ago and passed the leadership to his cousin. His answer was simple. He had been burned out, worn from being a leader for so many years, telling me that few leaders are able to lead a clan for longer than a couple of years. He trained his cousin himself to prepare him to continue the family legacy.

Of course his cousin had a different way to lead. MDSO became Knights of the Mercury Dragon and followed Lord Galahad's path for a year before the clan folded. When I asked if he had any regrets on his decision, he shrugged and replied that it could have still folded regardless, and that he felt the choice at the time, had been the right one.

Curious about the reformation of Mercury Dragons he became more serious. He had been comfortable being a member of another clan, made up of veterans. However he slowly noticed that many new arrivals who had chosen to join the clans were being ignored, some even turned away because they had little knowledge of how things worked here.

Others were being practically pulled into a clan with little explanation, thrown a few millions in their pocket and told to learn on their own. I commented that from what I knew, that was how clans operated.

He then shared that in his father's time, the veterans taught the young, they offered guidance so when they in turn learned the ropes and became veterans themselves they would help others as they got help when they needed it.

To this day he remembers the name of the veteran who trained him, a man who served under my father. General Voislav. He made him run through drills which he hated, but learned the basics of his profession with him, which helped him get a solid start to his career.

The Commander informed me that for the past few months his clan has been providing thousands of new arrivals who have chosen to join his faction with a full set of the med suit, carbonum armor and answered questions they had.

It was at this point when I decide to throw a hard question at him. I asked when the Council of Ares was going to make their move. His reply was short, "There is no CoA."

I mentioned the rumors on the streets of Tir and Old Athen saying otherwise. He said that neither himself, nor anyone in his clan has any intention of reforming the CoA, or joining anyone who may do so.

Furthermore, his personal belief is that even though there are changes needed to the way the clans operate, specially the Council of Truth; he feels that the risk of a civil war among the clans should be avoided as much as possible.

I asked him about these "changes". He said that the old and the current CoT have become almost the same thing, with almost identical problems. From a military point of view, there is no central command to get all clans moving on the battlefield. A few clans have formed alliances and made some progress since the start of the Notum Wars, but all the clans combined would be a far more effective military force than just a few together.

His point of view made sense, but from what I understand the different ideologies among the Legacy Clans and the rest of the clans practically contradict each other and it's the main reason why most clans don't work together. I told him this, and he agreed saying that a clan senate would be far more effective than the council.

I said that It sounded like replacing one set of seats, with another set of seats. He leaned back and explained that currently Legacy Clans are the ones who have the power, because they are the largest clans on the planet. However if they were to combine all other clans, then in truth, the Legacy Clans are not the real power in their faction. By sharing the power among all clan leaders, they could make further progress to end the conflict which has been going on for centuries.

He said that some Legacy Clans, probably would consider the option, but most would not give up the power they've held for so long. He recalled that at the very beginning, when the miners rose against the corporation, they were united, they were one clan. It was over time that when people did not agree with each other that some would walk away to create their own clans.

I asked him when was the last time he saw Commander Redruum, he told me a few years ago when he came back shortly to Rubi-ka. He wasn't sure if Clan Anarchist Syndicate even existed anymore, so even if he came back at all, he would practically have no support.

As we ended the interview he wanted to pass a message to all clanners. To not lose hope. Stating that clanners are keeping the aliens from taking over Rubi-Ka, the corporation being too busy with the aliens as well to make any kind of large offensive against the clans. He warned those who aren't ready to face the darkness in the Shadowlands, not to step through the portal. With a smile he said that Mercury Dragons is recruiting and that any clanner can find them on the gridnet at http:/mercury-dragons.org to learn about his clan.

I was escorted out back to ICC HQ by a few members of his clan, who appeared to be very friendly. Their attitude, and their leader's was not what I expected from a military clan at all.

I'm intrigued that he even suggested a more balanced way for the clans to come together through a senate which could very well bring about a more moderate and peace seeking alternative to the conflict against Omni-Tek.

Even though I agree that the Legacy Clans would be unlikely to consent to such a change; to make this idea public may get a few clan leaders to consider changes to the way the Council of Truth operates.

If Commander Redruum has not returned to Rubi-Ka in years, who exactly is the man who has been seen in Tir City and Tir County? this needs to be looked into, and I will keep you, the rubikan public, informed of my investigations.

The Council of Truth suffers mostly because of a lack of attendance from other clans. Despite several attempts to speak to Clan leaders, they, at the same time, feel that the Council does nothing, and refuse to join it. As a result, we simply do not have the manpower to enforce any ideas.

We don't even regard discussion of another council, especially the CoA, as relevant. There will be no civil war; Supreme Commander Silverstone controls Tir, Mr. Jacobi's Vanguards control Old Athen, and neither is going to budge. The Council is open to all Clans to join and lead.

Regarding Clan organization, we have certainly developed a non-CoT based inter-Clan network, and we have had a great amount of success defending and taking towers as well as controlling high value locations. It has been heartwarming to see a half dozen guilds come out in force to push back Omni attacks. As a Council Clerk, I feel very happy about how the Clans are working together, though I do hope more leaders or representatives show up in person. We are concerned with what is good for the Clans, not for the Council, and the Clans are healthy.

(( Sure it was an interview? Looked more like a "Hai got some questions for random important dude" paper. If it had been set up to where it was

Windguaerd's history as a fantastic military man involved ABC
    <interview follows>
    ...
Editor: Is there going to be anymore COA?
Wind: No, there will not be.
    Editor: bla bla?
    Wind: bla bla.
    ...
    etc.

Maybe it would be easier to read, and his/their point(s) would have been laid out and maybe sympathy could have been gathered, since it seems from what I did read that Clans are in some state of turmoil.

With this wonky style the message the editor tries to send loses a ton of its punch. ))
