THE SCHIZOFRENICS with an "F" -THEY DO IT THEIR WAY


There's a group of people in fashion, who
always tend to be two steps beyond.
They were wearing wayfarers when people were wearing
wraparounds. When people were wearing brown as the
new black, they were wearing dark blue.
They are the fashion schizofrenics, always out to rip apart peoples
interpitations of the current fashions, showing
an insider style almost only their kind understand properly.
The current "supermarket of style" has given
these little devils fresh inspiration and new
opportunities to confuse others. Now they're mixing
Hispanic, Japanese, American and Italian style,
pretty and tough, with expensive and cheap, all in one go.
Many areas - and almost all eras - in one go.
The results are their schizo-fashion philosophics:
Even snow wash jeans works, if you know how to use them.

The schizofrenic style is hard to do, as it accepts
clothes that are constantly on the borderline
between cool and really uncool.
The schizofrenic blinks>knowingly towards true suburban style.
She also has love for casual labels like
"Big E" Levi's, Superlovers and The North Face.
She has a history of Comme des Garcons and Margiela,
experiments with Versus and Fendi,
and wears Daryl K and Bernadette Corporation, when she can get it.
The style is colourful, in cheap looking watching-TV-colours
like pale apricot and turquoise , or Black.
The jeans are sky-blue instead of dark.
However, the schizofrenic makes an art out of constantly
breaking and creating the rules, whereas colour-codes and label-rules
change all the time.
Now that Tommy Hilfiger has acclaimed general street-cred,
he's uninspiring for the schizofrenic, because
she used to wear his clothes
when the rappers did.
And since the hip-hoppers have started rapping
more about Iceberg and Issey Miyake,
the schizofrenic is busy adapting.

While this schizofrenic fashion is getting more widespread,
it's getting more and more complex - particurlary in the sensitive world of
symbols. Despite the fact that a schizofrenic would see
a piece of Prada clothing as a welcome challenge to their
constructed (seemingly effortless) style, the Prada logo wouldn't
be fashionable in any other form than maybe the old
"Pasta" version done by Moschino.
As for Gucci, the least exciting thing is the "G".
D&G is ditched too, although almost getting post modern,
like the Versace symbol.
Relying on cheap tricks like the G and the Prada triangle
has become a desperately boring fashion statement,
almost mainstream - which, in these logics,
can be a twisted right thing.

mainstream-looking enough to be accepted.

Most schizofrenic of all labels is Bernadette Corporation, the small New York based
style/design group who introduced the Hermes studded bracelet as the
Good Accessory a long time ago. They know how to
please those multi-skilled schizofrenics with a tailoring as sharp
as the street is hard, and how to wear their
nail extensions with their masterly tailored dress. Pioneering this look,
they put Latinos on the pedestal years ago, encouraging the suburban
style done expensively, with haute fashion philosophics to go with it.
Their fashion is like an extra-innovative version of
what Junya Watanabe does for Comme des Garcons.
Christian Lacroix' diffusion line Bazaar has a similar idea going on
- clean but trashy, "Rico", and right.
Girls dressed in his clothes look like they have knifes
hidden in their handbags, equipped for a tough environment.
Did anyone ever say fashion was easy?
The truth is, it's actually hard on the inside and soft on the outside.
The schizofrenic is mercilessly filled with fashion facts, but tries to look normal,
at the same time as looking like the god of style for those who would understand. It's not easy.
It's in many different ways.It's schizofrenic.
