Thread: AO Linux HOWTO

  1. #81
    Well it WAS working great, but it wouldn't take the latest patch, so I bought AI, put it on my windows partition.. copied it over to my cedega install..
    now getting this error on startup:

    [doug@localhost doug]$ ./ao
    fixme: psdrv:PSDRV_BITMAP_SelectObject stub
    fixme: psdrv:PSDRV_BITMAP_SelectObject stub
    fixme: psdrv:PSDRV_BITMAP_SelectObject stub

    err:task:GetThreadQueue16 Breaking 16 bit for tid 2
    err:task:GetThreadQueue16 Breaking 16 bit for tid 3

    any ideas?

    woot....nearly
    with that new aocedega script I finally managed to compile AND install cedega!
    the autopatcher did not work.
    -could not find the files on patchserer.
    -downlaoded manually -> he checksummed the files in a infinte loop....

    after copied the patched win ao installation again.

    woot. i could log in! it took a couple of hours, but when i came back from shopping i was logged in.
    but could not move, type or do anything....

    No info in the patches.list file? I get no patches down from what i can see, so dont get it to work beyond the login screen.

    well, after hours and hours trying to "tune" settings (aocedega, ao and Xfree), and with official ATI drivers.... I can't get AO running over 10fps (except backyards or empty places).....

    Frustrating to see AO running sucessfully with linux but unplayable because of the fps... :-(

    I'll keep my Win partition and keep an eyes on progress with AO/Linux.

    Actually, when I say 10 fps, it's the max.. usually below and for example at bb Ent, i'm running 4/5 fps.

    I don't know your config, but under windows, I have 25/30 fps for the same place.
    (dsl 1024k, Pent. 2Gh4, 1GO RAM, ATI 9700).

    I would like to contribute to aocedega project and try improve the performance because I'm really really interested to play AO under linux and drop definitely my windows, but unfortunately, I don't have the required knowledge for that :-/

    gonna try this

    Hi there,

    i'm gonna try cause Windows really sucks. Who knows if its possible to run 2 clients at same time with 2 different accounts ?
    Sometimes it works under Windows XP but it still crashs a lot ( Microsoft ).

    Thx for any reply

    ATI desperatly needs to release better linux drivers!

    This is almost an non-issue with nvidia cards though, 10-15% drop there.

    Because you don't have all the required libs SaintDogbert, what you need to compile successfully aocedega is:
    -wget
    -XFree86 devel packages
    -XFree86 Mesa packages
    -XFree86 Mesa devel packages
    -Flex (flex-old on debian)
    -Bison
    ( http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/...p?articleid=45 )

    Check if all of them are installed for your distrib and then it should works.

    I noticed too i can have some compilation errors with gcc3+... i just reexecute the 'make' (sometimes 2,3 times) sentence and it works (yes, strange behaviour isn't it ?)

  12. #92
    anyone try this on xorg yet?

    Although this does make me extremely happy, using cedega does nothing to promote linux gaming. Companies will only continue to release windows clients if they think the community will do the work for them. just my 2c.

  13. #93
    I don't think so. It's just that Linux is just not on most game companies radar, at least for game clients. I believe for MMO servers, that's another story, but porting games to linux simply doesn't make sense for game companies currently.

    I believe the rare exceptions like Id software games or neverwinter nights are more because these games happens not to depend much on windows specific technologies, and there are people at these companies that are willing to make these ports, and the right combination of open minded people at the right positions for the release of a linux port to get a green light.

    If a company is genuinly interested enough in linux to consider porting their game, then they'll do it, and not leave people struggle to make a geeky, hard-to-configure solution like wine work. It's simply not anywhere near the support and quality that would be considered the strict minimum for a commercial product.
    As far as game companies go, I think a wine based solution to run a game is as good as no solution.

    Sweet! Definately have to try this out!

    On a side note, I'm looking to put linux on my main machine but I'm unsure which version would be most user friendly.

    Anyone have any opinions as to the best one?

    Oh and one other thing, I do a lot of work in photoshop, does anyone know of a comparable quality program for linux?

    Thanks in advance for any info

    P.S. Not trying to Hijack the thread so feel free to private message me instead of posting here if you want.

    in case anyone wonders, i resolved the issue. i rolled back to an older driver and everything worked nicely.

    Hiya, nice guide. Just want to add something I found out while I was trying to compile cedega on RedHat.

    I got errors from FreeType, I had FreeType1 and 2 installed in /usr/include/

    Solved this by renaming Freetype2 to Freetype2_, and renamed Freetype1 to Freetype2.

    This made it install and compile successfully

  20. #100
    Managed to get it up and running.

    For me it was to get latest ATI drivers, get down the CVS install it.

    Find out my AGP Vertex Ram : $ dmesg | grep 'AGP aperture'

    Changed these in the '~/.aocedega/config' :

    "Desktop" = "1024x768"
    "DXGrab" = "N"
    "VideoRam" = "256"
    "AGPVertexRam" = "64"

    On Anarchy Online, I used 1024x768x16 and full screen.

    Screenshot

    Tweaking on AO font, I found Helveticia size 12 pritty oki.

    Hope this helps
