Thread: OOC, Where should I start?

  1. #1

Question OOC, Where should I start?

I have been thinking on starting roleplaying, but the problem is that I don't know where to start. Most people I've heard are talking out of character and talking like they where in a game (which they are).

I've been playing pen-and-paper-RPGs for some years now, so its not that I don't know how to roleplay, but it's that I don't know where to find people with the same intentions as me.

I've just recently purchased Anarchy Online, so I'm not so familiar with the community yet, but it seems like there are people out there who wants to roleplay. (Otherwise Funcom would probably never had made an forum about it.)

If it helps you to know, I'm playing a soldier clan member. Check here for details: http://www.anarchy-online.com/charac...d/1/name/jekan

    Thanks in advance!

First of Kroax, welcome to AO.

Second, you may want to take a look at this post: http://forums.anarchy-online.com/sho...threadid=19589

There are some excellent suggestions in there for roleplayers of all skill levels. You might also find people to hook up with.

    Have fun!

The easiest way to get involved in roleplaying is join one of the RP guilds. Its not obligatory, but the guild structure does help maintain some measure of continuity.

There is a (incomplete) list of roleplaying friendly guilds at the following thread. How each guild interprets as "roleplaying" will vary. For some roleplaying equates to PvP. Other guilds try to emulate table top or Live roleplaying. For some roleplaying is purely social, going to parties and hanging out in bars while others aim to strike a balance by doing the usual levelling stuff, but staying in-character while they do so.

    Anyway here is the link.

    OOC

I found it pretty easy to get into. When i started this character i'd never played Everquest or anything like that. Never done pen and paper stuff either.

I just decided i was gonna create an Adventurer and roleplay a nutty explorer

It can be difficult at times when everyone is talking about the real world but i did my best to stay in character, and i ended up quite a few times sitting by a reclaim chatting in character to other reclaimers about what had just killed me this time.
It was at these times when i could really properly roleplay my character. Telling them about a fantastic new creature i'd just discovered for myself - then got killed by it. A few times the other person wasnt a RPer, but when they saw i was RPing they tried their best to be a part of it, which was a nice thing i thought (Either that or they were just humouring me )

After a bit of this i realised i need to join more people who RPed cos there was never enough about to keep it going.
Thats when i applied for the MD and after i was accepted into the ranks ive never looked back. Its been fantastic. I can still RP my explorer ... but now im the wild explorer who is trying to adapt to military life aswell

Anyway (i started rambling there sorry ) .. the point of this is, create yourself a character and do your best to RP all the time. Then when ya feel yer ready look for a guild that is heavily based around RP. Then hopefully things should turn out ok and you'll have more fun

meeting rp guild members in AO

I've looked at the responses in this thread and think they are very helpful for people who wanted to role-play in any on-line game. My expereince is limited to DAoC and AC (proud member of Jojii's Sword on Mornigthaw).

In those games I could do a search function and see if people were about from rp guilds to chat up but I can't find any command to do that in this game. The /List command doesn't really sem to help unless I could narrow its focus some how.

Any suggestions on how to search for and meet people from RP guilds in game?

    Kroax,

I posed a similar question on a similar thread a little while back.

And ironiclly it turns out to be the same thread that Nakomis lists in his post.

I took the advice there and found like minded people in game. First by looking at these forums and the guild organization one. (Savoy has the thread to one)

After a little research I did find a guild that seemed to be a good fit for me. Since joining the fun I have in the game has gone up dramaticlly. It is very nice to make friends in-game and even funner to do some role playing with them.

As for how to find players when you're in game Ehrynn, unfortunetly all I can think of is to get familiar with the role-playing guilds on your server and look at everyone you see standing around to see if there is any of them to chat with . I don't know a better way.

Edit: ooops I might as well give a plug for my guild . We are Vox Populi (Voice of the People) on Rubika 2. Check out the website in my sig, Project Revenant.

    Smile Thanks for your thoughts

I think I will take your advice and just start looking at player information to see if any members of the guilds listed on this board are around and then try to chat them up.

I guess transporter locations are good for crowds. Does anyone know if there are any well known role-playing gathering spots on RK-1 for Omni-Tek employees?

Are there any other active roleplay boards? I found one on the official links page but unfortunately it shut down a few months ago.

    Hope springs eternal!

I guess Rompa Bar in Onmi Ent is the closest thing to a roleplayers hotspot. I am not a great fan of the place, the /ooc socialising seems to crowd out the roleplaying and it can get a bit sleazy. You can also check out Baboons (the room behind the dance floor) also in Ent and Reets Retreat In West Stret, though these can be quite empty unless a planned event/party is going on.

Ultimately I do not think there are any short cuts. Powergamers have it easy, they can just meet up and go hunting. Roleplayers need a context to roleplay in. It just not enough to say "Hi, I hear you are a roleplayer, I roleplay too, lets roleplay together!" In the long run you need something to roleplay about, or the conversation goes stale pretty quickly, which is where roleplaying guilds can offer that extra bit of context.

As for other RP boards, there were a couple created when FC had shut down its boards, but now this is pretty much it.

Anyway if you wish to check out our org, the URL is in my sig.

    Thanks Savoy!

I agree with you completely about there simply are no short cuts. I always hope to "arrange" an opportunity to bump into established role-playing groups. I sort of see it as auditioning.

    Cheers
