Newland City Re-embraces Neutrality; Loren Warr Demands Severance Pay
    Frank Levinson McRae

Newland City -- (FJRK) -- Celebrations were muted and somewhat cautious in this once-bustling desert town, as Newland City opened up its arms to re-embrace a lost neutrality.

At approximately 1700 RST on February 10, Loren Warr and her band of mercenaries were escorted out of Newland City, and the Newland City Militia, fully adorned in Non-partisan armour and sporting the latest in JAME weaponry, moved in to fill the security void left by the termination of the Mercenaries’ contract for services with the Newland City Council.

“I do miss Newland City, it was quite a nice place. I especially miss them swims in the lake outside, the ocassional bite or two from all them fishes in the water. Hopefully with this new initiative…true justice will be prevailing in Newland City.”Riotsmurf”, a General of clan Leet, stated recently.

Riotsmurf echoes a cautious optimism that seems to be held by virtually every citizen of Rubi-Ka. Businesses in Newland City were seen stocking up on supplies and dusting off old crates of inventory in anticipation of the inevitable financial windfall that the city is expected to reap as a result of it returning to its place as a central travel hub for all factions.

Another member of the clans, Dr. Cindi “Razishlyat” Bolieu, a Veteral of the clan Forsaken, offered her optimistic words – and an ominous warning: “Congratulations to the city of Newland…[t]his is truly a terrific announcement, and a great day in the history of Newland. Let us hope that the scars on this program do not come back to haunt Newland [City].” No one truly realized how ominous this warning was, until late into the tranquil evening hours.

It was at that time that Loren Warr, accompanied by Ian Warr with several of her Mercenaries in tow, made their way back into Newland City, and towards her old post at the eastern end of city’s main street. Screaming “bring out the Council!”, Ms. Warr repeatedly taunted the new guards, and commanded nearby citizens to scour the area in search of any Council member. Though none could be located, a Newland City clerk quickly rushed into Council chambers and sounded the alarm, while Ms. Warr made her demands clear.

“I demand severance pay!” she exclaimed when asked as to the reasoning behind her return to Newland City. It is not known at this time whether there is any legal basis, or any clause in her initial contract for services, that compels the Council to so much as consider such a payment.

As the minutes ticked past, Loren Warr and her aide became increasingly angry and agitated with the lack of acknowledgement by the Newland City Council to their threats. The tension in the air was pervasive, triggered by comments from Ian that he and Ms. Warr should “beat on one of these guards.”

By this time, the Newland City Council realized that Loren and her brother might be too much for them to handle on their own. Council security contacted the ICC's security detachment in Andromeda, and soon after a distress message was being broadcast over all open air comm channels across the planet, calling for any and all available citizens from all factions to assist in the defence of Newland City. Members of all factions responded the call to arms, and poured in through the grid and Whompa exits ready to confront Loren Warr and her mercenaries.

By the time a sufficient force had gathered, Ms. Warr and the Mercenaries had targetted and attacked the closest member of the Newland City Militia, while horrified onlookers stood back, watching the entire event. Despite Ms. Warr’s assertion that “these guards are weak…pathetic”, they stood their ground courageously, displaying an uncanny level of tactical co-ordination that soon resulted in more than five of them all working in unison to repel the attack. As an ever-increasing number of citizens moved in to join the battle, Ms. Warr's army quickly found themselves out-numbered and out-gunned.

Loren Warr issued the call to retreat, but the call came too late. Soon after, both Warrs lay dead on the ground, surrounded by the corpses of her body guards. Some of the remaining Mercenaries who had somehow survived the initial assault attempted to capitalize on the chaos and flee, but a few sharp-eyed citizens noticed their retreat and proceeded to root, and then slaughter, the survivors.

Was this stunning humiliation in Newland the last we’ll see of Loren Warr? No one at this time will speculate. However, what is for certain, is that Ms. Warr seems loathe to relinquish her reign of terror over the peaceful, neutral city, and stands poised to continue to blackmail the Newland City Council through her patternistic disposition to the use of violence.

No one from the Newland City Council was available for comment at press time.

    Dr. Cindi "Razishlyat" Bolieu:

This is getting almost comical, if it were not so tragic. If you Warrs read this, know the following: Your days as mercenaries are over. This betrayal of contract will not leave you behind, and neither will your humiliating defeat at the hands of a mob. Go back to your camp and await death once again.

One thing, however, troubles me. The attacks supposed to have been carried out by the Warr thugs - it just does not seem to fit their style. Assassinations, industrial sabotage, bank hacking, permadeath weapons, it all seems beyond their rather simplistic attitude. At every juncture we know of, Loren Warr has acted with brutish intent, trying to muscle those around her into submission.

The rest just don't fit her profile. They are too complex and calculating. I don't think even Ian has that much brains - or far-reaching capabilities - to actually hack the systems of the JAME target droids, much less get away with it. Training hecklers on the demonstration, that is more their style. It just doesn't fit.

I think the more sophisticated tactics were planned and performed by those that would like to see Newland City still under Lorens thumb. Midia, or some Omni-Tek splinter cells.

You'd think Loren Warr might just forfiet any compensation claims the day she ordered her flunkies to shoot at the NLC Council meeting? Or is violence just so endemic to Rubi-Ka, that is not even considered a crime anymore?

Also worthy noting she is still the prime suspect for the murder of councilor Dwemnse. In an ideal word Ms Warr would be brought in an questioned and possibly charged for this murder. I am not sure under whose jurisdiction this falls under. I suspect under ICC law this would still be Omni-Pol, but that culd be politically awkward.

I think I see what you are hinting at, I am all for a citizen's arrest of Loren Warr. We can then bring her to a trial by her peers in Newland City under the newly formed militia.

I doubt many among the clans would object to an arrest and criminal prosecution of the Warrs by Omni-Pol. In fact, it would be quite astute politically to do so.

Oh i see how it is! The clans find it politicly expidient to try someone like Warr who was a pain in their side, but put a prominate clan member on omni-pol's worklist and suddenly once again the dignified, distinguished, and well run police force is the 'Operators of Tyranny' or something else just as'evil'

And Savoy touches on a critical point - Is violence now so common upon our homeworlds shores that we can wilfully ignore it?

Notwithstanding Loren Warr's evident childish behavior with respect to her actions following the termination of her contract, I would like to remind everyone that:

    • all actions taken against members of the clans, whether violent or otherwise, were explicitly condoned by the Newland City Council and the neutral population;
    • neither Ms. Warr nor any member of her mercenary force so much as once breached the terms of their contract, and performed said contract in accordance with the terms, restrictions and conditions specified therein;
    • any and all clan members' opinion are forfeit in any discussions involving legal matters, so long as their leader and Council fail to answer charges regarding their involvement with the Dust Brigade; and
    • in accordance with Mr. Ross' wishes, this matter should be solely spearheaded and managed by the neutral population of Rubi-Ka.

However, I wish to remind all participants in this initiative that only Omni-Tek Corporation, or its subsidiary Omni-Tek Corporation of Rubi-Ka, are authorized to initiate any legal action against any private citizen, in accordance with the terms of the Agreement to Lease as entered into between Omni-Tek Corporation and the Interstellar Confederation of Corporations.

Alternatively, neutrals may lobby the ICC to supercede Omni-Tek authority and thereby proceed themselves with a legal action against Loren Warr. Omni-InternOps does not support this course of action without the prior express approval of Philip Ross or the Omni-Tek Board of Directors on Omni-Prime, and will hereby defend Loren Warr, in absentia if necessary, against any form of malicious prosecution in this regard.

    Sincerely,

You misunderstand. Shocking, I know. It would be politically astute for Omni-Tek, not the clans, to bring legal action against the Warrs. This has very little to do with the clans and much to do with the popular view that OT-RK supported the Warrs and their de facto control of Newland. Criminal prosectution of the Warrs by Omni-Tek would do much to silence claims that the Warrs were supported by Omni. It would be a wise political move and a very good bit of PR.

Speaking strictly as a clanner, it doesn't matter much to me what Omni-Tek does with the Warrs; we have our own ways of dealing with them, and the fact that they are no longer the guardians of Newland City means we can explore some of those options without having to worry about innocent citizens getting in the middle of it. Figuratively, or literally.

Omni-Tek did nothing to put Loren there and did everything we could to help the Neutrals get her out. Please read up on the timeline I've put together under the Newland City Council's announcement to create a militia.

    Thank you Kithrak.

So you say it doesnt matter Aerinyi, and perhaps with Warr it doesnt. But if a clan leader was to be arrested for crimes against Omni - Tech, would not a cry of outrage be sent against Omni-Pol and the Company once again? Its happened in the past, it will happen again - simply because the Clanners never want to think that perhaps, maybe just a little, Omni Pol can do its job.

Of course it would. Omni-Pol has a very poor track record with the clans, given it's history of overstepping it's jurisdiction and attempting to make arrests without sufficient evidence. Omni-Pol still refuses to give any information on it's supposedly iron-clad evidence against Radiman, and I've yet to see remotely convincing evidence against most of Omni-Pol's other clan targets. Meanwhile violent criminals walk free with Omni-Tek ID badges. I do in fact want to think that Omni-Pol can do it's job. However, unless Omni-Pol's job includes harrassing clan leaders who are working toward the possibility of peace on Rubi-Ka, I don't think I'm going to get what I want.

Kithrak: just to clarify, I never said Omni-Tek was behind the Warr's rise to power. Only that it is a popular belief among many Rubi-Kans. That's a fact. Personally I have no idea whether Omni-Tek was involved with the Warrs or not, but given the efforts by Omni citizens to get rid of them and the justfied anger that neutrals feel toward the Sentinels, I'm willing to assume Omni had nothing to do with it.

Looks like we mutually aggree on something, we both aggree that Omni-Pol might not be the best group to turn to if we want Loren Warr braught to justice. Seeing as I already have my tranqualizer gun loaded how about getting some rope and we can go Warr hunting.
