    A sacrifice of dust

    (( History here ))

"Sundai, Can I get you a drink?" the girl asked politely. Sundai politely refused the hostess' offer. Drinking even one concoction could cloud her mind and she wasn't there for socializing. Relays had been intercepted, regarding the visit of a Dust Brigade member to an Omni controlled area. She didn't know what being a Dust Brigade member entailed, but she knew it was someone "they" wanted to capture, and he would be in her midst shortly.

She walked further into Rompah's and her eyes rested on an Omni-Pol officer sitting at a booth in the corner. Several seconds later and an Intern-Ops officer entered as well. Sundai giggled quietly to herself as more and more people, one by one, came into the establishment.

Why in Shere's name would they insist on killing someone in a place so con****uous?

Perhaps all the visitors were there to greet her target too, or perhaps it was just a busy place. Sundai anticipated her own greeting. She would approach quickly and bury her daggers into him. If an ounce of life remained she would capture his spirit, as quick as possible and make her escape.

A quiet voice came over her comm-link and she listened closely; "Subject A142... Authorized bio redirect in progress..." it clicked and became silent again.

The target would be directed to a new reclaim terminal in Omni HQ where he would be captured. She knew this because she herself had verified the terminal was working correctly. While examining the terminal, she typed a set of numbers into a small device she had pulled from her backpack. She had memorized the numbers when she heard the technicians speaking earlier.

The number correlated to the identity of her next victim. The identity would be redirected elsewhere from a command console. The device she placed on the terminal would listen to the signals on the wire. When the device matched the signal with the identity number, it would discharge a small magnetic pulse; thus confusing the terminal and insuring the person would not reclaim. It had successfully worked four times so far and had allowed Sundai to deliver gifts to her spirits.

She could feel when her target entered the building. She could sense him. He emanated light but not in an innocent subservient way. No, he was a killer and worse, he was a killer for “them”.

She had wanted to kill her target quickly with a minimal amount of notice. Unfortunately, the Omni-Pol Officer who was sitting at the booth and an Intern-Ops officer immediately flanked her target. The Omni-Pol officer wanted to arrest him immediately, while the InternOp’s officer, perhaps recognizing the futility, just wanted to have a discussion.

It was a mistake for them to attempt to do anything but destroy him. They were foolish for thinking otherwise. One does not ask a predator why it kills - it is its nature. In Sundai's eyes, Commander "Caid" Nottor was nothing more then prey. Prey that would meet its end sooner then anyone expected. A leader of the goatheads; his soul would serve her well and be a great offering.

"Yes, the spirits will be very pleased." she thought to herself.

She watched the Omni-Pol officer, Saxon1, wring his hands as a jurisdictional argument ensued between Eternalforce and him. Saxon1 contacted his superiors, while Eternalforce quickly continued pressing Caid for information and explanations. Several minutes brought several more Omni-Pol officers.

Eventually the group all moved into the back of the bar and Sundai followed behind. She whispered into her Comm-link when she noticed the sheer number of people around the target. "I cannot neutralize the target. Omni-Pol and InternOp’s are here..." She sat down on a couch where she could keep watch and waited for further direction.

There was an eruption of voices into her comm-link and a minute later several Unforgiven officers were sitting next to her. They watched the target and started making small talk to avoid any su****ion. It was hardly necessary with emotions boiling over at the targets table.

"Target is moving..." Sundai heard one of her officers whisper into his comm-link. She watched as Caid quickly attempted to flee from Omni-Pol capture. A chase ensued with all of them trailing closely behind. It ended quickly, as more Omni-Pol officers had apparently been stationed at the door to prevent his exit.

Sundai began sneaking closer to Caid as the Omni-Pol officers attempted to reason with their suspect. The officers had positioned themselves to prevent Caid’s escape, which gave Sundai just enough room to eliminate him. She moved in quickly and thrust both of her daggers into each side of his neck. She aimed for his arteries and was pretty sure they had pierced their target. She pushed them as deep as she could, then quickly pulled them back out. Her instincts were confirmed as the body instantly fell to the floor in front of her. She cursed herself quietly for not getting the chance to siphon his spirit but a great happiness enveloped her. She would be given a temporary reprieve from the sacrificial demands of her spirits.

Everyone stared at the body in disbelief, except Sundai. She quickly made her way behind the officers and to the door.

As she ran out she paused momentarily to look at her victim. Capture him in her memory. She beamed, pleased with her efficient work; but her smile quickly turned as the body started fading.

"No!! That's not possible... he should be..." her thought was interrupted by a voice on her comm-link. "Target recompiling now. Get ready... he should be there any minute." it said, followed by another voice stating, "Capture team in position."

Sundai quickly ran out of the building in shock, only half listening to the excited voices that continued in her comm-link. She had to get back to the terminal to remove her gadget. If they found the device, her short-lived Rubi-Kan career may be over and with it her one chance of delivering the gift of mortality to her spirits.

A man's cursing exploded into the comm-link. She heard something about Omni-Pol removing Unforgiven's authorization to change the bio-reconstruction channels. The target had never gotten redirected and just like that, Caid's signal was lost in the stream as it relayed through the network of channels.

Sundai heard another voice ask if the target had died in the transfer but she didn't need to keep listening. She already knew, as they soon would…

The spirits had already begun torturing her for not delivering their sacrifice.

Ailish glanced around the bar quickly, and then turned her attention back to the serious business of her nails. She pulled the file across her index fingernail, enjoying the sheer physicality of it. In an age of vibroblades and energy slicers, Ailish took a visceral low-tech pleasure from the rough sand covered card. He was late, and she hated waiting. Still, his timekeeping was not subject to her approval.

A gust of wind blown sand swept into the interior of the bar, presaging his arrival. The cloaked figure entered the room, a swift appraisal of the occupants no doubt noting the presence of only Ailsh and Mack, the bartender. He walked directly to Ailish's table, taking the seat opposite her. The eyes behind the mosquito design helm were familiar.

"You're late. I trust that there were no... complications..." Ailish left the question hanging.
"No. None." The voice was modulated, electronically enhanced to disguise its true form. Ailish doubted that there was an analyser on Rubi-ka that could provide an accurate extraction of the voice behind the mask.
Ailish opened her mouth to question further, but a nagging internal caution changed her mind. She remoulded the words in her mouth.
"I'll not insult you by asking whether you got what I asked, you'd not be here if you hadn't. Here's the price."
    Ailish pushed a small case across the table. The stranger popped open the case and removed the datacrystal inside. He pushed it into a reader and scanned the screeen briefly. He nodded slightly and spoke;
"This seems to be in order. Here is what we have been able to retrieve on Sundai. There's not that much, but it should help." He casually tossed a second datacrystal onto the table.
    Ailish smiled thinly.
"I'm sure it will be more than adequate." She retrieved the crystal from the table.
    He nodded.
"If you want our help, Ailish," the first time he'd addressed her by name, she noted, "you just have to ask. Our previous offer stands, the price has not changed."
"No!" perhaps too fierce, she thought. She softened her tone, trying to hold her voice level. "No, no... thank you..."
The cloaked figure shrugged. He turned to leave, but then paused.
"What did she do, this Sundai?"
"What did she do? What did she do... I'll tell you what she did," Ailish's lip turned slightly in a snarl. "The bitch tried to kill my husband. That's what she did."
A strange grating noise came from the figure. It took Ailish a few moments to realise that it was a laugh. He turned and strode out of the bar and into the settlement outside leaving wind blown sand in his wake.
Ailish looked at the crystal and frowned. A small shrug and the frown was gone. She stood, smiled widely at Mack, and headed out into Hope. She had a lot of planning to do...
