And you still think a PvP fight between a Non Expansion Char and an Expansion char is fair?
I don't think they should be fair and I don't think they can be, by the definition of fair you're using.

I'll give you an example. If I want to taketime to explore and to roleplay casually, to help other players, to participate in group activities that don't really benefit me, and so on, I have to make choices. I have to choose between giving up some of those things, playing for longer each day than I already do, or neglecting certain things.

In short, I am broke, my armor sucks, and I have neglected my implants. How is it then that I can find myself in a "fair" fight with another player my level?

I may find another player whose character is a weakling, one who is lower level than me, or what have you, but an even match still won't often be fair because we stand to take away from it different degrees of notoriety and satisfaction.

This is not a complaint, mind you; it is a defense of the system and a denial of the importance of fairness in this game. AO permits players to avoid combat with other players if they are careful. Should you find yourself in a pvp fight, it is in large part going to be a fight between care and planning which took place before the fight occurred.

If want a battle of skill, I'll play a game like Quake II or Subspace in which moment to moment knowledge my surroundings, my opponent's physical movement, and the comparative strengths of the available weapons within a given situation are all vital elements which provide for a deep contest. If I want a chance to be cunning and to benefit from comprehending a broad situation I can't entirely see, I might play a strategy game or a more thoughtful action game such as Tribes or Allegiance.

Nine times out of ten you're not going to win a fight because of skill or cunning in AO, or even luck. Unless you are fully specialized for combat and you can know your opponent is also (only possible in a league situation or a fight between friends, to both of which the complaint you voiced above can't apply), pvp on RK is necessarily going to be a contest focused on planning and preparation - time and effort equipping yourself and wisdom exercised in picking your battles.

With all due respect to you I think you're asking that the game continue to live by a principle which it doesn't live by today or even attempt to live by.

The point is that you got a choice when this Expansion pack arrives: Buy it or don't! Noone forces you to. Well If I want to see what is on that map that came with the game I already paid for. If I wanna go see the Fame City of Jobe, which I spent three days scouring Rubi Ka to find coz it was rumored to be in the oceans south of Rome. Or maybe in the North Western wastelands. Three days, in a month which I already paid for.
I was disheartened to read the original news promising "a" new city, and moreso now in a way. Unless we're to be quite charitable indeed with our definition of "surprises", it seems to me that much work is being done and will be done on playfields leading neither to Jobe nor to Sparta nor from the Newland Desert to the Wailing Wastes.

It is fine to have closed playfields, but we have a great many of them, some of them important to Rubi-Ka's history, many of them visible on the map which came in the box, most of them named in maps within a strategy guide endorsed by Funcom and described in detail on the official website long ago. I have maps for five of them installed in my HUD and a sixth waiting in a backpack.

It is a very specious argument indeed that some people have attempted to construct, claiming Funcom never promised to open these playfields, all such games have them, we just need to be patient, etc. Not to put down the existing ones - they are very nice for the most part or I wouldn't care about gaining access to more of them - but I think the notion that they're missing for any reason other than necessity and scaling back of priorities is obliterated by fact that there's no logic behind their layout, and the fact that there has been and remains a glaring absence of care and attention in the alignment of those that exist now.

The expansion seems like the nail in that coffin, because from all appearances unless Funcom intends to add a new playfield every ten days between now and their expansion's release date, we're getting something else instead.

I have now officially decided that I want a nickel for every 'nail in funcom's coffin'. By far the most overused forum phrase ever.

I'm one of those that is looking forward to this expansion pack, that said I really hope that FC will have fixed all the features in the current game, that was supposed to be there from the start (trade skills), IHMO (as a customer) there is no point in expanding a 80 % complete game. from FC view I can understand the timing of the expansion, with SWG coming out and all that...

So FC, for me you have given yourself a ultimate deadline for fixing, whats already should be working....

"With all due respect to you I think you're asking that the game continue to live by a principle which it doesn't live by today or even attempt to live by."

A fair enough thought and to a degree true. However, we are all currently waiting for the 14.2 patch. This patch is supposedly going to fix the unbalancing of PvP. The results of 14.2 is a lowered damage output in general and since they are not reducing MOB hp or AC. Well its gotta be a PvP patch then.

This patch is to fix and make sure the game lives by those principles.

And of course a person that plays more than you. That spends more time on implants, armor, weapons, IP placement, will have an advantage over you. But just because he/she bought an expansion?

"Jobe is not on any map that was delivered with this game. "
    -Kawhoopa

Then it must be off world. Coz I bought the game with a full map of Rubi Ka in the box. And when I go to Rome and try to move more west by exitting through the Exits in Rome green I can't seem to get out. Thats fun because the in game map clearly indicates that there is more land out there. I actually have the entire planet on the ingame map too.

"Nothing that has been released from Funcom indicates that the new perks or changes will unbalance the game. This is just a board hype over something that no one has any idea how will affect our game."
    -Kawhoopa

True enough. First off I am making guesses. But after almost a year with this game, patches, changes and the likes I think of its as a not totally unqualified guess. Secondly I am making these points so someone at Funcom can think it over and perhaps see that I am right, or at least that this is the way a certain percentage sees things.

"I for one a looking forward to this exp., but I am not saying that I will buy it when time comes. But when the exp. is released, I have the information I need, and can decide wether to buy it or not. Today I don't."
    -Kawhoopa

I may buy it too. I don't know yet. I too will lurk on the boards, listen to people who has the expansion and talk to them.

I never said that I would never spend a dime on another Funcom product, nor would I ever buy the expansion. I showed my displeasure with an Expansion like that held what the game should have had in the beginning, and to what will unbalance the game. If Funcom sees it an thinks: "Hmmm he's right. Lets think this over once more. Ok we will drop the things that gives Exp chars and unnatural disadvantage over others. And maybe give the maps a look again" That would be great, mission accomplished I don't see it happening. But if it did

"But keep on ranting and complaining about something you don't know squat about. It's fun to read."
    -Kawhoopa

Well I am glad to see that my opinions amuse you.

I think the expansion will be great if Im still playing by the time it comes out. But you people really do whine too much. "I dont wanna pay for an expansion I already pay xxx dollars a month for a broken game" blah blah blah. The game isnt broken but still needs tweaking. A lot of my friends play EQ and they are still constantly balancing the game even after 3 or so years since release. If you dont like the game then quit and get a girlfriend. The arguing and flaming that goes on these boards is so pathetic sometimes. No matter what FC does you're still gonna whine. So tell your mom or someone that can understand your current genetic situation. I know several people who only post on any of these boards to flame FC or anyone else they see fit. Just shut up. I think they should require you to put your Address and phone number in your sig I think the flaming would cease immediately.

Umm guys? All the major MMORPG have had expansion packs. All of them have been successful. No real problems there. Not any going to be here.

    Talking who's major?

AO isnt a major MMORPG. It was at release supposed to be one. Just hype that died soon after!

According to Antiguardians there are 48360 characters total. How many chars has each account on average? 4 perhaps? I dont think there are more than 20 000 subscribers. Thats not much after almost a year and it will decrease IMO even with the client software at half price and their other offers to pull in more players.

I dont know if the expansion will go smoothly. Looking at Funcoms record in such things it might be a disaster but the real question is: will it really make this game more succesfull or shouldnt they rather invest their energy and money into something more useful like making clear rules of conduct and enforcing them? Or getting serious about the ORIGINAL CONCEPT of an ongoing storyline and conflict instead of adding more EQ- like-stuff, dungeons and zones. They wont beat EQ at that anyway as Verant is is getting its next expansion ready...
