Susano-oh,
That's a very good idea. Just by itself it'd make for much more complex missions. Of course it requires some stereotyping of the different classes to do.
I read somewhere that the fixer quest isn't attainable unless you have the necessary skills to pull it off.
Parhaps if they made up some five different types of partial missions for each class, tied those to a truth table and to a test on the teammates individual skills, (so that agent-submission(assassination), was never pared with doctor-submission(rescue), but could be pared with doctor-submission(biowarfare), or could be substituted for agent-submission(theft), which was compatible with doctor-submission(rescue), for instance, and neither of those if the agent in question couldn't sneak worth a flip, or had lousy combat skills.)
Better yet would be if the whole mission system were revamped to take several of the ideas presented here into account.
Mission mobs, like quest mobs, that spawn in different parts of the world, to forward a not-so-much-scripted as pieced-together-from-sub-scripts, mission on to the next spot. Missions that span several playfields instead of several levels. Missions built with a more outdoorsey feel. Missions that give rewards desirable to the combatants, (best with a check of skills and never offering a reward that takes more than 10% of what skills are available.) Missions that use the traditional roles of the characters in traditional roles, (instead of assuming their positions on a combat team, have a mission with a doctor have a fair chance of involving medicine, one with an engineer often involve the tradeskills, or goals only a pet could accomplish, or both, missions where the goal is to NOT engage the enemy in combat being regular for fixers, also missions with more locked doors, and more trapped ones as well.) Missions where killing the opposition REDUCES chances of token acquisition. You get the idea.
Oh, what I'd do for a mission that didn't tell me, in so many words, to kill target, spot target, spot object, recover object to terminal, or apply provided tool to object. How about get to target, and apply tool to target? How about recover object to object? What about substitute provided tool for object, either returning with said object or destroying/keeping it? How about recover target? That would be fun. "Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to rescue the knights daughter from the clutches of the Evil Omni Tek. Should you fail in returning with this individual, or if you are caught in the act, we don't know who you are or why you claim to be clan." Missions where stealth is more important than guns, in fact missions where if you have to fire a shot, you've already lost. "This is a mission of mercy. You are to kill NOBODY, unless absolutely necessary. This is not to say they will be happy to see you, as these odd splinter sects have a tendancy to think that anyone who isn't one of them is one of the enemy. Get in, load this canister of leet-be-gone into the ventilation system and get out. Be aware that if you are forced into a confrontation, your chance at achieving your stated objectives may be fine, but your chance at doing so in a manner that promotes the cause will take a slight downturn."
Maybe even missions that take the tradeskills into very serious focus. "It is believed that ICC has been experimenting with "efficient" nanoprograms on "captive-field" nanites. If this is so, their interest in Rubi-Ka may increase to unhealthy levels. We need you to test this premise. In the local ICC lab, SBC has established the first nano-free room on Rubi-Ka. In it is the new program-disk for what may be the first nanoprogram to operate outside of either Rubi Ka's biosphere or living tissue. You must finish this crystal for them, and test it in the nano-proof room. To do this, you will need a carbon rich rock (QL-100 or greater), which you will need to acquire somewhere, (the current shortage of QL 100 carbonrich rocks being the only holdup to SBC's research.) All the other items that you will need can be attained in the machines of any general store, along with a book that describes the procedure in detail. Rumor has it that the crystal will be of the Protection school, so make sure you buy symbol libraries and crystal reflection patterns of that school. It is suggested that you provide your own tools for completing the carbonrich rock to prepared program crystal, as nothing has been suggested about such refining equipment on-site. Good luck." Completion on uploading of the nanocrystal and testing it on a very avalon-esque combat dummy. The nanocrystal to be made by, presumably, one player, and tested by a second, while a third helps them get there intact.
Okay, now I'm rambling.
