Rubi-Ka Informants Network (RKIN)
Waezel left his modest office and stepped into the streets of
Borealis. The air was different here than in the other cities, a
little less terraformed... or perhaps it was just the altitude,
but he liked it. It gave him a sense of freedom. Freedom
from the constant bickering of the clans, from the eternal
power struggle of the Omni department, from the bullying
mercenaries and the off planet ICC paramilitary security
force... freedom to pursue his chosen profession.
He walked through the chilly evening to the whompa at the
other end of town. He paused for a moment and looked at
the doors. Stret West Bank and Newland...
Through the first door in Stret West Bank was 'The Reet
Retreat'. Most people didn't even remember the origin of the
name he mused... it dated from the early days of the clan's
rebellion against Omni. The Reet had been one of the first
forms of life to be created on Rubi-Ka. They had flourished,
multiplied to the point of becoming a nuisance. But when
ordinances were passed to encourage their hunting. The
would be bounty hunters met a nasty surprise, they would
sight a single reet and start combat, the reet would start to
flee and inevitably the hunter would pursue. But the reet
always fled to it's nest... and reets live in colonies. Later in
the rebellion the clans imitated the reets and led many an
Omni parole into an ambush. The phrase Reet Retreat came
to mean being led into a nest of trouble... Waezel thought it
described the neutral club rather well... it seemed safe
enough on the surface, but a deadly political game was
always being played there. Of course, it was better than
Rompas, the atmosphere of intrigue there was so intense that
it made even Waezel shudder.
But it was time to focus on the task at hand. He stepped
through the whompa to Newland, then quickly through to ICC,
it didn't pay to spend too much time in Newland these days.
In the courtyard at ICC he saw a young Omni woman. He
approached her and gave her the reference that he had
created. 'This is what you asked for ma'am.' She nodded and
transferred the arranged sum to his account. Waezel smiled
as he walked away, it was the personal touch that made him
successful he thought... still business was a bit slow. When
he returned to his office he drafted a short and appropriate
message to post to the grid.
It read as follows: 'The Rubi-Ka Informants Network is now
available to fill your informational needs. We can acquire and
disseminate any information you require. Prices negotiated on
an individual basis.'
