Thread: Report from the idea rush in Old Athen.

  1. #1

Talking Report from the idea rush in Old Athen.

Well, we pulled it off after all. This is a rather scetchy summary of what we think would be nice for the city of Old Athen. Thank you to everyone who was there. If you think I've missed something, do tell. Everyone else can contribute too. I'll doublecheck the logs later on too.

So, even though things started of a bit slow, we got a small crowd. Everyone behaved nicely, and there were some really nice ideas. We moved to the small white house that SilkeX had checked out, and that would be a good place for a club (see the idea at the end). It had the right feeling to it, and everyone agreed that it got a nice location too.

This meeting was rather informal, but it went along really well, and I think everyone said what they wanted to say. Not only people from my guild was there, but also a lot of people that were passing through and heard my announcements.

I'm sorry that this was on RK1 only, but I only have one mind. Good thing this forum isn't divided then.

Below are the actual ideas. Enjoy!

    - Buildings: Most buildings in the east parts of Old Athen are wrecked, and of little use. We should clear up the rubble, and build new buildings. They can be used by the ICC or guilds as offices, or by individuals as large apartments.

    - More light-posts are needed: Most people see Old Athen as a rather gloomy town. This will chase away darkness, and make people feel a bit safer. Maybe make the lights less cold, and tint them in green, red, blue and yellow, depending on the parts of the city?

    - Some sort of weather shield could span the ‘roof’ of the city: With all the technology we got, it would be possible, and nice, to create a weather shield. This would brighten everyone’s day, and the risk of getting a lightning bolt in your head would be eliminated.

    - Paint the walls: The black walls make you feel rather trapped. Talented artists could paint scenes of the battle for Athen, beautiful landscapes, or whatever fits. This would give the city a very unique touch.

    - Create a working trash-removal system: Robots are very handy for these things, but they are not used. Any engineer could create a bot to help clean the city up.

    - Clear the street road: Shops and houses currently obstruct the street going straight through the city. These should be moved to the side of the street. Plants and trees could be planted on the sides of the road, in order to make a stroll along it much nicer.

    - Remove the Omni-references: Currently there are a lot of signs and statues marked with OT. They might be torn down, but that doesn’t make things better. The city should not be another ‘people-packet’, even though it technically is (or was) Omni-2.

    - Create some kind of memorial: Statues, plaques, tablets or a museum honouring those who died in the battle for Old Athen should be placed/built in a central spot.

    - Create a more open system: We currently have no idea about what is going on among the offices in the city, and we can only guess what goes on in the prison and so. We have nothing to hide.

    - Create a park: Here, people can relax and generally ‘chill’. Maybe some kind of open zoo, even? I would prefer a waterfall, but that is up to personal preferences. Thus, make it as varied as possible.

-A grid station: Placed in the mark, maybe? I fail to see why other, much smaller, cities got grid stations (What’s so special about Sentinels, really?) but Old Athen got none. The grid does benefit from having as many nodes as possible.

    - Terminals: There are a number of information terminals located in the city, but none of them works. These would be really useful, in case someone can get them online. We all know the value of words.

    - A shrine of sorts: Here you can, religious or not, do what you find peace in. This would also be a good spot for organizing weddings and name changes. Maybe divide this into different parts to carter for everyone. This building would be a landmark of sorts, and be rather grand.

    - A dojo: A quiet place to meditate and train. Mainly for martial artists, there would be teachers who give out secrets in the way of unarmed combat (sells MA attacks), melee weapon specialists (gives out tips on weapon stats, and sells MA weapons) and training dummies (unkillable targets to test out weapons on). Maybe even some one on one arena, for those who wants to try out their skills against real opponents.

    - A sky tower: You know those tall towers, with a restaurant or club in a rotating think at the top? Why not create something similar here, so that people without a plane can get a view of the city? The actual décor could be something similar to a space station. There would even be a landing pad you could use to access it.

    - ‘The setting sun: In the white house near the wompas, this club would be located. It is inspired by both technology and ancient stone architecture. On the roof, there will be a garden and a swimming pool. The interior is bright and cheerful. There would be bars, dance floors, meeting rooms, a grand hall, and other things. The club would also be partially underground.

Oh, and thanks to Jdaug and Merasandrin for dropping by.

    What can I say?

Well, Omni-Tek had already alot of those points planned. Clans have made the mess. Should they clean up? They can't.
It requires vast resources to clean their own mess up.
Give Omni-2 back to Omni-Tek without any hazzle and you will all get the city in the state we all want.

(OOC) Thats like the Japnish says gee Midway is kind of dull looking, why don't you hand over the island to us, nukes shipyard and all and we will clean it up for ya,

    (BIC-Back in Charater)

Do you atcualy think that with the anymsty gone and OT patrols shooting claners on sight do you think we would give up Athens after the blood and sweat we poored into it?

(OOC-Clan guards seem to give them a five second head start, no idea why but I saw a omni run past a guard (In Tir) the guard say Leave now! or die later, he got a good distance away(Heading More into Tir before the guard attacked him(He was going for the area) Later when he came back the guard said the same thing but this time he was heading for the woompa and there the guard left him alone)

(And a final OOC-Why the Heck is War-Torn Vally War-torn? Never heard why still wondering who attacked what and were)

And my final question is why the heck did WEST athens get the Grid Terminal and not old athens?(Comisk? any funcom employes want to comment?)

Don't touch my beloved city, Old Athen!
I like it just the way it is.

Old Athen has an atmosphere I can't find any other place on the planet. Next thing you know they'll be cleaning up Aegean!

Yet again i see hostilities from the clanners.

You destroyed Omni-2´s beatuie with your attack and execution of the civilians and personnel there.

And if i may point out then the clans dont have that much technoligy, they have stolen it, or taken it from others, ICC or OT.

The city have been in ruins for over a hundred years, so i dont think that they will begin a cleaning now.

How would they then be able to fight of the dust brigade when they attack again???

  6. #6
Well, despite the few people who came 11 or so, there where lots of great ideas, and I truly hope at least some of them will become reality.

Ignore the Omni scum. They try, pitifully, I may add, to detract from us... the "beauty" of mono toned mono formed monolithic office buildings surrounded by gray walls on the edge of wasteland... hah. It is an administratvie outpost for your failed mining endeavours. Beautiful city my arse. Are you going to compare it to Omni-Slum - er, Omni-1? Or to be beautiful and pristine Tir?

The streets you build are as twisted as the reasons they were built. My advice: stay away from urban planning. You're really bad at it.

On the more positive, non-Omni side, improvements to Athens would be nice. As my comrade in arms Gogliostro pointed out, Athens has a certain dark, gloomy atmoshpere that fits it just fine. While I think the ideas brought up are admirable, WGMelchior, I would hate to see an Athens with happy bunnies hopping through fields of flowers.

Clearing the center roads would be nice, but hardly easy to do. At leas,t the Mongol Meat stand by East Gate could be moved.

I do agree that the rubble should go, and it be replaced with more aesthetically pleasing buildings (perhaps more than 1 shade of gray, just to be WILD) or parkland/memorials.

I think that the lighting in the city is fine. It adds intensity to the experience.

I actually like the destroyed Omni propaganda. It makes me chuckle, and feel a wave of patriotic pride at seeing it lay there, broken and battered.

In this time of war, I don't think that the Clans have the resources to build things like rotating sky towers and the like... keep things simple, and ask for things in steps. The basic cleanup must be accomplished before any costly ventures are mentioned.

(OOC, I recall someone mentioning the battle of Athens and the Wartorn Valley. If I understand correctly, this is the battle depicted in the intro video. There is a NPC in Wartorn who talks about the battle. He is a scrap collector.)

Do not get me wrong, i do not want to be treathed as an enemy just because i surrport Omni-Tek, i just want peace, and want to be able to travel over the planet without getting shoot at by renegade clanners or sometimes... by my own.

The announcement went out 3 weeks ago, although it wasn't very grand or so. If you have any suggestions of your own, just post them here.

And to reply to all you omnis: We made the mess, now we clean it up. You got a problem with that?

And you do not need intricate computers and technology if you have some actual skills. Your own head is a powerful tool indeed, if you just know how to use it. Do you?

what about giving the opportunity to rich rubi-ka citizens to buy a "home-grid terminal" that you can just pust in you appartement and then you ll can grid from your own home. And perhaps even grid TO YOUR appartment .....

    In-C:

I dont have a problem with you holding Omni-2, but i do have a problem with the blood it costed just because you had to show off, there was no need to execute all those peopels.

And yes, i know how to use my head, even tho some people, on both sides seem to use it mostly for target practice, maybe they just dont like my attetude towards them.

    /ooc:
A grid point in your apartment ?? wont happen i think.
But send a mail to feedback and ask them :P

Like all clan-towns, the once proud city of Omni-2 now looks like a post-nuclear dogtown. I have to commend the initiative to clean it up, although I can't see any reason to without a solid air-to-ground gas strike and a OT cleanup crew.

Have you ever seen a nuklear contaminated town? They look FAR more messy.

And our ability isn't the problem. I would do it myself if I had to. At least I know how to build robots, and I will 'take out the trash' myself if I have to.

This is more about getting the officials to get their end from their chairs and so something. It kind of worked in Tir, so I have hopes in this case too.

And just so all of you know: This is not done to defy Omni-tek. It's not an attempt to outshine Omni-1. It's not to show that we are supperior when it comes to initiatives (can be argued about though). I have had it with laziness, no matter who shows it, and I can't stand to see destruction like this.

At least when a human dies, there is someone to clean up the mess (read: insurance). It's time we do the same for our homes.

    WGMelchior,
I for one fully support the ideas that you brainstormed and will help the reconstruction in anyway I can.

There is no more beautifull city than TIR in RubiKa. You can't deny it all of you OmniPoor.... If we can do Athen as beautiful (in another way) as Tir, then i totally agree the project ! And these clan who loves the Athen atmosphere, then, why not goin to the OmniSide ? Rome is the mirror of Athen... Black/gray, poor city without any smell or colours... If you like destroyed things, simply go to the JunksYard lol

I just hope that council will do something about Athen....at least remove these f***?! statue of OmniTeck civilisation...

    I am in favour....

... but PLEASE do try to get historic names right! Guess what: there is no place on Rubi-ka called Athens, Old Athens, Athens West, West Athens or similar. The correct name is Athen, named not after a polluted ruin on Earth, but after a heroic Clansman!

    Quote from the Rubi-Ka timeline:

    "October 12, 29209
Still largely unopposed by Omni-Tek forces, the clans occupy Omni-2 and drive out, imprison, or execute all Omni-Tek personnel. They rename the city Athen - not after Athens in ancient Greece, but after one of the clan leaders who died in the attack."

This is part of our history, and should be known to all rubikaans.

I do not recoknice Athen as the official name, trhe official name is Omni-2, not named by a low rebel, who caused the murder of many OTs in teh battle all those years ago.
